Meeting of the University authorities with the best students

On 15 January 2021, at the invitation of His Magnificence Rector Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk, a meeting with the most talented students from semesters V and VII of engineering studies at the Silesian University of Technology was held.

More than 140 participants took part in this online event. It was attended by Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk; Professor Wojciech Szkliniarz, Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Education; Professor Anna Chrobok, Head of the College of Studies; and Professor Anna Timofiejczuk, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Within the framework of the ongoing recruitment process, current curricula for the second-cycle studies were discussed, including the interdisciplinary field of study in nanotechnology, which is implemented by 7 faculties at the University. Students and scientists discussed the advantages of studying nanotechnology and possibilities for scientific development as well as perspectives for the employment of nanotechnology graduates. The speakers included: Professor Mirosława Pawlyta from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Dawid Janas from the Faculty of Chemistry.

- We are in a period of dynamic transformation of the higher education system. It should be remembered that the new Law has changed the way higher education institutions function, including awarding of academic degrees. The year 2020 was supposed to stabilise it, but due to the pandemic and new challenges we had no chance to bring the system to an optimal state from the point of view of conducting research and scientific activity - recalled the Rector, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk. He also referred to the surveys conducted by students on remote learning. - Without a student, i.e. the end-user of the higher education system, it is impossible to improve it - he said.

The students became acquainted with the didactic offer addressed to exceptionally talented students. They discussed issues related to the "Spread Your Wings" mentoring programme, where the education is oriented towards participation in Project Based Learning, benefits from involvement in student scientific associations, as well as opportunities to financially support students who achieve the best results in their studies.

- We assume that students must acquire the exact sciences base before they move further. We do not forget to introduce interesting classes in the first semesters. In the second semester, the PBL appears. It is understood as both a problem and project-based learning. There will be such classes so that you can consciously choose your path to graduation. We have more and more small and medium-sized companies in Poland This is where general knowledge and interdisciplinary work is desired - emphasized Professor Wojciech Szkliniarz, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education.

Students had also the opportunity to ask the University authorities questions in the chat. Many of them referred to various forms of education and organisation of classes, as well as the impact of the pandemic on the teaching process.

- I would like to take this opportunity and wish you all a very good choice of studies, which will be in line with your interests and which will give you the greatest satisfaction, both in the course of second-cycle studies and, above all, in your future professional career. There is nothing more valuable than a job that you enjoy coming to and a job that you treat more as a way of pursuing your interests than earning a living.

I wish that the Silesian University of Technology enabled you to make such a choice of courses and that it gave you a chance for interesting studies, good education and, in the future, a good job - said the Rector, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk.

The meeting was prepared by the College of Studies together with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
