Meeting of the Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology

The Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology, which includes local government officials, representatives of scientific, professional, and creative institutions and associations, as well as representatives of entrepreneurs and economic organizations, met on Tuesday, November 29th this year at the Zabrze campus.

This time the meeting place was the headquarters of European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC).

The participants were welcomed by the President of the Social Council, Jarosław Mlonka, PhD Eng. - President of the Management Board of Sumitomo SHI FW Energia Polska S. A. and the Rector Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, who presented the challenges awaiting the University in the coming year, primarily related to its finances, as well as organizational matters related to – among others - recent changes in scientific disciplines.

- We try to deal with both crises and finances. So far, we are doing well – summed up his speech Rector Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

In reference to the Rector's statement, President Jarosław Mlonka emphasized that these challenges concern both universities, the public sector as well as entrepreneurs.

Then the deans of the Faculty of Organization and Management Prof. Jan Kaźmierczak and the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering Prof. Zbigniew Paszenda took the floor. They presented the activities of the units they managed.

Next speaker was Prof. Janusz Kotowicz, PhD, Eng., who gave a presentation entitled "Hydrogen technologies at the Silesian University of Technology". The Vice-Rector emphasized that the University in its activities wants to refer to the role of Silesia in the energy and fuel economy, and strives to play a leading role, also in the development of hydrogen technologies. In this respect, many activities are undertaken, including the participation of the University in the Silesian-Malopolska Hydrogen Valley, participation in the work on the creation of the National Centre for Research and Implementation of Renewable Energy (PolRES Living Lab). The Silesian University of Technology also implements many projects of NCBR, NCN and European projects within these subjects. There is also cooperation with the cities of the region in the field of hydrogen technologies. In reference to this issue, the Rorector mentioned the presidents of Gliwice, Rybnik, Katowice, and Zabrze present at the meeting. In turn, the Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Promotion Tomasz Trawiński, PhD, Eng., discussed the subject of Investment at the Silesian University of Technology.

The participants of the meeting also had the opportunity to visit the laboratories of the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC), and its Director, Prof. Marek Gzik, presented the areas of the Centre's activities. The project is implemented together with the world leader in medical technology, Philips. The aim of the project was to create a unique team of highly specialized research and technological laboratories, dedicated to supporting companies operating in the field of implementation of medical products and technologies, which are part of current health issues that respond to the challenges of modern medicine in the area of aging society and the implementation of solutions in the field of personalized medicine.

The meeting was organized by the Vice-Rector for Cooperation with the Social and Economic Environment, Prof. Janusz Kotowicz, in cooperation with the Director of EHTIC, Prof. Marek Gzik.
