Materials Engineering Day

The Faculty of Materials Engineering and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering joined the action organized by the Polish Society of Materials Science and organized the National Materials Engineering Day on March 17th . Hundreds of secondary school students from the region attended the event.

The National Materials Engineering Day is a new initiative. For the first time, the Polish Society of Materials Science is trying to interest future students in this scientific discipline. To this end, many activities are held in 21 academic and research centres - workshops, shows and lectures. This year, two units of the Silesian University of Technology joined the campaign.

About 150 students showed up at the Faculty of Materials Engineering in Katowice that day.

- The goal is simple - to promote material engineering among young people. This name may sound quite complicated, but it does not say what this field really does. It is an interdisciplinary course that combines many fields, i.e. technology, research, the possibility of using various types of materials in industry or economy, in various areas of our lives, and we wanted to tell students about this - said dr hab. Eng. Magdalena Jabłońska, prof. SUT, one of the organizers of the event in Katowice.

In addition to learning the theory, young people took part in demonstrations and workshops during which the application of materials engineering was presented, among others in the aviation industry, ceramics, welding or construction of microscopes. However, the biggest interest on that day was the breaking of the record, i.e. participation in the longest material engineering lesson. The same initiative was also organized in Gliwice. Here, the students met at the Education and Congress Centre.

- In fact, half of the employees of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering conduct research in the discipline of materials engineering, which is why we joined this initiative together with the Institute of Physics.  We want to show that materials engineering is not a complicated field that is detached from reality. We show it in applications in mechanical engineering, mechanics, but also in production engineering and management - said dr hab. Eng. Anna Timofiejczuk, prof. SUT, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

There were 275 students at Education and Congress Centre . In addition to participating in a record lesson and demonstrations, they had the opportunity to get acquainted with the activities of scientific clubs and talk to students who chose materials engineering.

– In secondary school I was interested in a bit of physics, a bit of chemistry, but as a compromise I chose materials engineering and today I know that it was a good choice. I am in the process of looking for an internship and I get a lot of offers from the industry. This field of study meets the needs of the market - said Jakub Górny, a material engineering student, who convinced young people that it was a very future-oriented field of study at the Silesian University of Technology.
