March 27th - The National Materials Engineering Day

On March 27th, 2026, for the fourth time, we will celebrate the National Materials Engineering Day (ODIM). The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness among secondary school pupils about materials, their production technologies, and applications. The event is to promote education in materials engineering specialties and majors, as production plants and companies still demand specialists in this field.

The National Materials Engineering Day is a joint initiative of universities and scientific and research institutes, implemented since 2023. This year the event will be held simultaneously in 13 Polish cities. The theme of this year’s edition of ODIM is “Space Materials.” Missions to the Moon, exploration of Mars or placing satellites in orbit are possible thanks to the development of modern materials and technologies for their production. Without the continuous development of material engineering, more and more expeditions in space would not be possible.

Silesian University of Technology joins the celebrations of the National Materials Engineering Day (ODIM). The coordinator of the event at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is Dr Hab. Agata Śliwa, Prof SUT., and at the Faculty of Materials Engineering and Digitization of Industry – Dr Eng. Agnieszka Szczotok.

During this year’s ODIM, participants will try to set a Polish record in the category of “The most origami rockets folded in 4 hours” in various locations.

As every year, as part of ODIM, secondary school pupils from all over the region will be able to take part in presentations, workshops and activities prepared by our employees and students.

Participation in the event is free. The participation of secondary school pupils and their supervisors in presentations, workshops and activities requires prior registration.
