Learning without limits - innovative solutions for people with disabilities at the Silesian University of Technology

Modern technologies and innovative projects play a huge role in improving society's quality of life. They are also important in terms of developing the accessibility of many areas for people with disabilities. Such activities are undertaken as part of the Learning Without Limits programme.  A summary of the tasks carried out was held on 21 June.

Education and the popularisation of science should be areas with unrestricted access. This is also the aim of the “Learning without limits” programme implemented by the Centre for the Popularisation of Science at the Silesian University of Technology and the Special School and Education Centre in Dąbrowa Górnicza. On 21 June, a meeting was held at the Centre to review the results of work to date on modern forms of learning and rehabilitation for people with disabilities.

Scientists and students from the scientific associations at the Silesian University of Technology have joined in activities to support the learning of children and young people with disabilities. They are working on teaching aids based on design thinking - science and technology that is useful for the recipient. Their projects incorporate aspects from the fields of speech therapy, tyflopedagogy, surdopedagogy and also rehabilitation of motor disabilities.

The “Learning Without Limits” programme offers many advantages. Through the use of innovative teaching aids, education, rehabilitation or therapies become more effective and support the development of students in a comprehensive way. Using the scientific potential of the Silesian University of Technology plays a significant role in improving the necessary accessibility for people with disabilities. In addition, the programme has not only scientific but also social implications - its primary objective is to sensitise scientists and students towards the needs of every individual and to demonstrate the value of science in various areas of life.

The meeting at the Special School and Education Centre in Dąbrowa Górnicza was attended by scientists from the Silesian University of Technology and representatives of the student scientific associations: AI-METH, Scientia, TechnoMat, Mater-Tech, Biokreatywni and MobileTech. Participants of the meeting could become acquainted with completed projects, including devices for learning Braille, motor and sensory integration therapy or developing the sense of touch produced by student scientific association AI-METH as part of “Integral Senso” and the follow-up project "The world likes people who like the world. Explore the world with your senses".

The visit has also provided an opportunity to share experiences with the teachers from the Centre, learn about the Centre's infrastructure and discuss plans to work on further teaching aids for children and young people.
