LabOpenDay 2023
Visiting laboratories and workshops, talks with scientists and presentations of educational offer of faculties - this is what LabOpenDay 2023 – Open Day at the Silesian University of Technology looked like. It was attended by secondary school pupils from all over the Silesian Voivodeship.
The event is a continuation of the Open Day, which took place in March in the Educational and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. Back then, secondary school pupils and people interested in studying at our University could get to know the educational offer or listen to interesting lectures, now visitors could enter the faculties and the laboratories. Scientists and students were waiting for those interested, talked about how to study at the Silesian University of Technology, one of ten research universities in Poland.
– Pupils could look into the laboratories, see places where teaching classes take place and perhaps decide to study at the Silesian University of Technology. We also want to give a chance to those who have already signed up to our University, so that they can come and see the didactic base and learn about the research potential of the Silesian University of Technology – said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology prof Arkadiusz Mężyk.

- The University of Technology is a technical university. Therefore, practical activities, exercises conducted in laboratories and various types of laboratories are the core of technical studies. Today, secondary school graduates and pupils could visit these places in a quiet, pleasant atmosphere, see them and get to know them – added Dr Eng. Jarosław Brodny, prof. of Silesian University of Technology
During LabOpenDay, one could also talk to scientists and students. All faculties in Gliwice, Zabrze and Katowice took part in the event.
Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering in Katowice presented its classrooms and laboratories. – The Open Day is an opportunity to present our offer and encourage young people to study at our faculty – emphasizes the Dean of the faculty, dr hab. Eng. Piotr Folęga, prof. of Silesian University of Technology – Enthusiasts of automotive, aviation, railway, logistics, traffic engineering or fans of modern forms of transport such as shared mobility, electro-mobility or space engineering will surely find something for themselves here. In addition, students can develop their passions by participating in the activities of scientific circles, and as part of their activities they can construct their own car, glider simulator, electric scooters or autonomous robots – emphasized the Dean.

Young people also willingly visited the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering in Zabrze, which showed modern laboratories of the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC). – Among our guests there were young people and even children and their parents. Perhaps some of these young people and children will come to us in the future and in these laboratories will be doing science on a world-class level – said Dr Eng. Pawel Badura, prof. SUT, vice-dean of the faculty.
Several laboratories were opened for young people by the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science. The students first got acquainted with the offer of the faculty and then visited the laboratories with the scientists.

“I wanted to see how it all looks, compare different fields of study, decide which one I would like to finally choose. I was also encouraged to participate in LabOpenDay by the fact that I can see the laboratories, the equipment on which they work and the fact that I can talk with a lecturer – said Przemek – a pupil of Silesian Technical Scientific School in Katowice. – I decided to take part in an open day, because in the future I would like to study computer science and the Silesian University of Technology is one of the best universities that educates in this field. I wanted to see how it looks from the inside – said Mateusz, a student at the School of Communication in Gliwice. – Such an event allows you to get to know the University from the practical side, not only from the Internet or informants – adds his mother.
