Krzysztof Musioł, PhD, head of a research project in the ‘Polish Metrology’ programme
The Ministry of Education and Science has announced the results of the first competition under the 'Polish Metrology' programme. Twenty six projects worth over PLN 21 million were submitted for funding. Among them was a project submitted by an employee of the Department of Measurment Science, Electronics and Control of the Silesian University of Technology, Krzysztof Musioł, PhD, entitled 'Research and development of digital methods of four-port impedance comparison'.
The 'Polish Metrology' programme will support the implementation of projects aimed at increasing the research capacity of metrology institutions, strengthening intellectual capital, increasing the competitiveness of the Polish economy, developing modern technologies, stimulating the development of metrology, particularly in the areas of health, environment, energy and advanced measurement techniques.
The project led by Krzysztof Musioł has received funding of PLN 460,100 and will run until July 2024. ‘The project concerns the development of a digital reference measurement system for the reproduction of the impedance measurement unit at the Central Office of Measures in Warsaw. The development of this system will increase the accuracy of impedance comparisons on every level. Electrical impedance measurements are ubiquitous in the design, manufacture and testing of electrical equipment and electronic circuits. Various types of sensors: resistance thermometers, capacitive displacement sensors, proximity sensors (including touchscreens), barometers and hygrometers, convert a non-electrical input quantity into electrical impedance. Impedance spectroscopy, which plays an important role in non-destructive testing for a wide range of analyses, is also based on the accurate measurement of the impedance of a system or sample,’ said project leader Krzysztof Musioł.
Increasing the accuracy of impedance standards is of interest to industry and research centres, as it indirectly contributes to increasing the accuracy of industrial measurements and thus to increase product quality.
The research will be carried out using the infrastructure of the Department of Measurment Science, Electronics and Control of the Silesian University of Technology and the Central Office of Measures. The research team consists of scientists from the SUT’s Department and employees of the Central Office of Measures in Warsaw.
