Invitation to an open lecture

Chief of the Division of Geochronology and Environmental Isotopes of the CND Institute of Physics invite you to an open lecture at the Centre of New Technologies at 22B Konarskiego Street (AULA A), which will take place on February 27, 2024 at 12.

The lecture will be delivered by dr Christian Matthias Huels from the Leibniz Laboratory for Radiometric Dating and Isotope Research, University of Kiel, Germany. The guest will give a lecture on radiocarbon dating of iron artifacts.

The properties of metallic iron, in particular the ability to dissolve carbon in its crystal lattice, thereby increasing its mechanical strength, allow radiocarbon dating in principle, provided the carbon source is contemporary with the time of production of the metal.

The planned lecture will discuss the preliminary conditions and pitfalls of 14C iron dating using archaeological examples.

In addition, the presentation will be devoted to the extraction of carbon from an iron network and radiocarbon measurements of known archaeological iron samples and modern iron standards with a known concentration of 14 C.
