InterTechDoc’2025 Anniversary Edition

The  International Interdisciplinary Conference of Doctoral Students of Technical Universities, InterTechDoc'2025 has come to an end. The anniversary edition was held at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in Zabrze

InterTechDoc’25 is an inter-university scientific conference with an interdisciplinary character, aimed at students, PhD students, early-career researchers, and representatives from the industrial sector.

This year’s edition took place from 15 to 17 September. The official opening was attended by, among others, Prof. Marcin Basiaga, Dean of Faculty of Biomedical Engineering,  Prof. Krzysztof Fujarewicz, Director of the Doctoral School, and Prof. Marcin Górski, coordinator of the European University EURECA-PRO at the Silesian University of Technology who gave a presentation about EURECA-PRO.

The InterTechDoc conference is a venue for presenting research results, exchanging experience, and integrating arly-career scientific community. Its main aim objectives are to  support scientific development, promote inter-university collaboration, and create the conditions conducive to interdisciplinary academic dialogue.

“It is a great achievement that this event has reached its tenth edition. This year, we involved the Doctoral Student Council more actively in the organization, as we have noticed its increased engagement recently, which is very important to us,” explained prof. Krzysztof Fujarewicz. “The conference is addressed to early-career researchers. It offers them the opportunity to gain their first conference experience, present their work, participate in discussions, and observe how scientific work looks from the perspective of science popularization. This is often where they gain their first conference skills. The interdisciplinary format is also very important, as young researchers tend to be open-minded and do not limit themselves solely to research within their own discipline."

The event was attended by 40 doctoral students who presented their research findings in both Polish and English.

„This year, we expanded the participation to include a poster session as well,” said the President of The PhD Students Council Szymon Ruczka, M.Sc., Eng. “All papers and presentation are evaluated. This is important for the participants, as it provides an opportunity to gain experience, the committee gives feedback, engages in discussion, and advises on the direction of project development.”

“I participated in the conference to present the issues related to the functional and spatial transformation of post-industrial areas and their potential for reuse, exemplified by the former Orzegów coking plant in Ruda Śląska which was transformed from a degraded and contaminated industrial site into a recreational and educational space, showing the potential of industrial heritage reuse. I particularly focus on ecological and cultural aspects considered during the revitalization process,” explained Sandra Pichlak-Czop, M.Sc., Eng. a doctoral student at the Faculty of Architecture. “Participating in InterTechDoc is an opportunity to share research results and reflect on the role of post-industrial heritage in shaping the identity of contemporary cities.”

On the final day, during the event’s closing session, awards were presented. In the poster category, the winners were Joanna Gierlotka (Silesian University of Technology) and Samira Sadipishkamar (Silesian University of Technology), while in the presentation category the best was Magdalena Krycha (University of Silesia).

The event was organised by the Doctoral Students’ Council, the Doctoral School of the Silesian University of Technology, the Career Office, and the Office for Persons with Disabilities.

“We are pleased to have hosted the participants of this conference. I believe that young people are the future of science. They are science’s hope for a better tomorrow.  Our Faculty also has many young staff members,” said the Dean Marcin Basiaga. This event is especially important because it is addressed to young people. It provides a venue where they can exchange experiences, share knowledge, and discuss their ideas. From the perspective of science, this is a key part of collaboration. We cannot carry out high-level research on our own; it is possible only through cooperation with other institutions.”
