How to protect your ideas and innovations from theft?

At the Centre for Incubation and Technology Transfer of the Silesian University of Technology, a conference entitled “Trademarks and industrial designs in the activities of companies, universities and local governments” took place. The event was co-organized by the Polish Chamber of Patent Attorneys.

On Friday, March 24th , experts interested in the protection of industrial designs and patents met at CIITT.

Among the speakers there were representatives of the most important units dealing with the application of property law, patents and trademarks, e.g. Patent Office of the Republic of Poland, the Silesian branch of the Polish Chamber of Patent Attorneys, the Intellectual Property Department of the District Court in Katowice and patent attorneys.

- In my opinion, the protection of intellectual property is a topic that should be discussed in all possible ways when it comes to science and the synergy of science and business. This is the foundation on which this cooperation should be built. In my opinion, there is still a shortage of knowledge on this issue - said Dr Eng. Magdalena Letun-Łątka, director of CIIT.

On a daily basis, the issues of creators of innovations are dealt with - among others -  by patent attorneys, and it is to them that those interested in protecting their inventions should apply.

- For us, patent attorneys, the most important thing is to make all creators and inventors, as well as business owners and authors of innovations, aware that it is worth protecting these innovations. If we do not provide such protection at the right moment, we will often lose our ideas, because, unfortunately, priority in the fight for their rights is given to the one who was the first to protect their product or idea - explained Magdalena Filipek-Marzec - patent attorney at the Silesian University of Technology, the Dean of the district Silesian Polish Chamber of Patent Attorneys.

The main topics of the lectures and discussions accompanying the conference were: the importance of trademarks and industrial designs for the development of the economy, reform of the EU law related to industrial designs and problems related to intellectual property.

The conference was an opportunity to exchange experiences, e.g. by experts dealing with the protection of intellectual property.
