High Flyers twice on the podium in Droniada

Students from the High Flyers science club of the Silesian University of Technology took third place twice in the Droniada Challenge tournament, which was held on the Champs de Mars in the Silesian Park from June 3rd to 9th.

Droniada Challenge is a technology competition, one of the most difficult in the world, combining computer science, mechatronics and robotics with aviation. This year, the competition took place throughout the entire week.

- Task scenarios in Droniada are based on situations that may occur in reality, in which drones can provide real support to people. The ability to quickly react to situations that happen to students during competition and cope with tasks will be able to be used with confidence in the future - explains Sławomir Kosieliński, president of the Instytut Mikromakro Foundation and the originator of Droniada.

High Flyers are veterans of Droniada. They have been in it since the beginning - since 2014. In the eleventh edition of the event, they took third place in the Martian Mines and Relay competitions, for which they won a prize of PLN 1,500.

- I assess our performance throughout the tournament very positively - said Jakub Gutt, president of High Flyers. - In the Martian Mines competition, our task was to create a system that had to autonomously locate, distinguish and pick up balls from the ground, and then transport them to the lander, which was a barrel, and drop them. In the Relay, smaller drones whose task was to illuminate the area on the ground had to be transported using a larger unmanned ship. We used a Hexacopter drone with six engines. We would like to thank the Silesian University of Technology for supporting our science club.

On the last day of Droniada 2024 GZM, the Droniada Expo was also held on the Champs de Mars.
All interested people could see drones, fly them, see demonstrations, take part in competitions and talk to representatives of companies and universities, including, of course, the Silesian University of Technology, which was a co-organizer of Droniada. During the entire week of the event, an autonomous Blees bus drove around the Silesian Park free of charge.
