Heat Machines Hall after modernization

Yesterday, at the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, an official presentation of the modernized Heat Machines Hall was held, which will soon be available to employees and students of all faculties. In the new hall there are 11 modernly equipped laboratories. The investment cost almost PLN 9 million.

The Silesian University of Technology has completed a thorough modernization of the Heat Machines Hall, transforming it into an innovative laboratory adapted to the challenges of modern engineering education and scientific research. The project, implemented by an interdisciplinary team of experts from the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, is a response to the dynamically changing needs of the energy industry and the growing importance of green transformation.

The modernization project was carried out under the direction of Prof. Janusz Kotowicz, Dr Eng. Agata Malina, Prof. Leszek Remiorz, Dr Eng. Mateusz Brzęczek, Dr Eng. Daniel Węcel and Dr Eng. Krystian Smołka – specialists whose knowledge and experience ensured the highest substantive and technical level of the undertaking.

- “From the beginning, the goal was one. To create a laboratory where interdisciplinary research and projects can be carried out. -” We have laboratories adapted to the work of teams dealing with various disciplines, but in particular environmental engineering, energy and mining as well as chemistry” – said Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Janusz Kotowicz.

In the machine hall there are 11 modernly equipped laboratories with different areas, which both individual researchers and extensive teams will be able to use. In the laboratories there is a basic equipment for conducting research, among others fume cupboards and hazardous gas extraction system, compressed air, single and multi-phase current. In some test rooms, gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and helium are available. In the hall, adequate ventilation and a ramp allowing for the transport of heavy equipment was taken care of. There are also laboratory cabinets and cabinets for chemical reagents in the laboratories.

- “It is really the basic equipment, which in case of need can be supplemented with additional equipment necessary to carry out some research or project implementation. There are adequate conditions to bring it here and install it. Thanks to this, the rooms become universal” – said the Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Investment of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Zbigniew Paszenda.

The laboratory for the work of a specific team will be coded and available to a designated group of employees.

- “We create conditions for teams that have a chance to implement interesting projects, but they lacked the right space. Therefore, although in particular these modern laboratories will be used by the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, employees of other units can also apply to receive free space for work here” – emphasized the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk. He added that such spaces are being created in different places of the university.

The fact that the laboratories in the Machine Hall have been equipped with the latest measuring devices, control systems and demonstration installations will also significantly affect the quality of teaching students. The possibility of training in such modern laboratories will allow students

to gain knowledge of technologies used in real industrial conditions. Thanks to this, the university creates an educational space for the 21st century, where theory meets practice.

- “The rooms will serve us for teaching, conducting research, but also opening up to external partners, thanks to which we could conduct joint research with, for example, industry partners” - said Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Mariusz Dudziak - Dean of the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering.

-“In particular, students of our Faculty will benefit from it, but also future students of the new field of study “Sustainable Consumption and Production,” where one of the thematic blocks will be implemented in our laboratories “– he added.

Modernization of the Heat Machines Hall cost PLN 9 million, of which the largest part - PLN 6.9 million came from the funds of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of the Council of Ministers.
