Gliwice Scientific Meetings. Results of cancer research were presented
On 21st November, the Silesian University of Technology inaugurated the next edition of Gliwice Scientific Meetings, devoted to research in the field of oncology.
The eighteenth edition of the Gliwice Scientific Meetings 2024 conference began today in the auditorium of the Education and Conference Centre of the Silesian University of Technology.
The conference has been continued since 1997 with the participation of Polish and foreign scientists, who undertake oncological topics in their research.
“The topics discussed at this conference are important not only for science and scientists, but above all for all of us – as people. Ultimately, we are the real recipients of solutions that are created as a result of the research conducted and presented here. We are all the more pleased that such an important conference is taking place within the walls of the Silesian University of Technology – said the Vice-Rector for General Affairs of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Bożena Skołud.

The conference is organized from the beginning with the participation of three units – apart from the Silesian University of Technology, also the Gliwice Branch of the National Institute of Oncology named after Marie Skłodowska-Curie PIB and the Association for the Promotion of Cancer Research (SWBR).
“This event is proof that we have been able to work well together for years to finally host scientists from all over the world and share research results and experiences. Science has no boundaries, and thanks to such events we can seek even better solutions in the field of oncology “- said Prof. Dr Hab. M.D. Sławomir Blamek, Director of the National Institute of Oncology in Gliwice.
- “It is also important that the organization of the conference is supported by the City of Gliwice.” - said Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Budka, Mayor of Gliwice.
- “I am glad that many students participate in the conference because it proves that science and research centres are the future, and the results of your debates will in a moment have a measurable impact on how medicine will develop” - she added.
The conference focuses on various aspects of cancer research, molecular and cellular biology, medicine, biotechnology, and bioinformatics.
The program also includes a lecture by Prof. Theresa Whiteside of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre in the United States on the scientific achievements of Prof. Mieczysław Chorąży, an outstanding oncologist, long-term head of the Cancer Biology Department, Institute of Oncology in Gliwice.

The conference will last until November 22nd, 2024.
During the event, a Mieczysław Chorąży scholarship was awarded to a young scientist of the Silesian University of Technology, Dr Marcelina Jureczko.
