Geocaching - an educational outdoor game

What is Geocaching, when was it created, what are its rules and how to play it - this is what the participants of the meeting entitled: "Geocaching - treasure hunting game...", which took place at the Silesian University of Technology could learn. The event was organized on the occasion of Treasure Week, as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024.

Geocaching is an educational outdoor game for treasure hunters and not only. – To play it, you need to log in to the website, create an account, and enter the city you are interested in. There you will find a map with marked caches and various hints and tips. In the hiding places, there are tasks waiting for participants that they must complete. In addition, there is a lot of interesting information that cannot be found in ordinary guidebooks - said Paweł Woźniak, an employee of the Upper Silesian Branch of the State Geological Institute in Sosnowiec.

One variation of this game are EarthCaches. They are hidden in geologically interesting places. - It is a global game played by over 7 million people. There are over 3.5 million game hiding places (Caches) around the world. It is worth adding that in the United States, all geological education is based on EarthCaches - he adds.

The young people from secondary schools in Gliwice present at the lecture came across the idea of geocaching for the first time, although some students had already heard about it. – As far as I know, it's a game about finding caches containing various items – says Jakub from ALO in Gliwice. - My mom discovered this game and thought it would be fun to participate. All I know is that you walk around the city and look for hiding places, says Wiktoria.  – Such a game gets people out of the house; they can go somewhere and see places they have never been to before – adds their friend Bartek.

Students from the Technical School of Environmental Protection in Gliwice also came to the lecture. – Treasure Week, earth's treasures and today's meeting are thematically very close to us. We have been cooperating with the Silesian University of Technology for years because such events are interesting for our students. For them, it is also contact with the university. We have cases where our students decide to study here after such trips, said Anna Wolińska, a teacher at the Upper Silesian Educational Centre.

Tomorrow is another day full of attractions as part of the Treasure Week at the Silesian University of Technology. You will be able to, among others: take part in workshops on identifying minerals and rocks, which will be held at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology.
