Free research in the SOLARIS synchrotron

The National Synchrotron Radiation Center SOLARIS opens the possibility of conducting free scientific research using synchrotron radiation. NCPS SOLARIS is an infrastructure within the Jagiellonian University that provides free and open access to a unique research tool, i.e. a synchrotron and cryo-microscopes.

Research techniques available in SOLARIS serve scientists from various fields: physics, chemistry, materials science, molecular biology, pharmacy, engineering, energy, archeology, nanotechnology, life science and many others. The Center offers research on, among others, magnetic properties of materials' surfaces, their chemical composition with imaging, chemical reactions taking place on the surface of materials, electron and spin band structure of crystalline materials, structural properties of materials and the structure of macromolecules, cells, viruses and morphology of nanomaterials.

The Krakow Synchrotron enables research with the following methods: X-ray absorption spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray electron spectroscopy, photoelectron microscopy, scanning X-ray transmission microscopy and electron cryo-microscopy.

Research time at the synchrotron is distributed through open competitions among interested research groups. The only determining criterion for free access is scientific excellence, assessed by an international panel of experts. Any scientist wishing to conduct research at SOLARIS may apply for access to free research time. Synchrotron users receive support from research line managers who help to assess the technical feasibility of the experiment and then assist during the measurements, supporting the selection of experimental parameters and often also the preliminary analysis of the data obtained.
