Final of the Days of Gliwice Young Scientists
For the 12th time, at the Silesian University of Technology, the Final of the Days of Young Scientists from Gliwice was held. The aim of the event is to promote mathematical and natural sciences among pupils of primary school and preschoolers and to develop cooperation between Gliwice schools and the Silesian University of Technology.
As part of the project, pupils took part in competitions, workshops, and lectures. This year’s final, which took place in the Education and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, was attended by several hundred pupils, teachers and authorities of Gliwice and the Silesian University of Technology.
- We congratulate the city on undertaking this initiative bringing together the most talented young people, who from the early years of primary school, in cooperation with our University, want to pursue their research passions - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk.
- I think that these are young people who are perfectly prepared to study at the Silesian University of Technology in the future, especially since our offer of studies is constantly updated responding to the needs and expectations of both the market and young people - emphasized the Rector.
During the 12th final of the Days of Gliwice Young Scientists the project was summarized and the winners received congratulations and prizes.
- We are proud to host the most talented young people from Gliwice. During today’s event, the young laureates not only received the awards, but they could also listen to an interesting lecture and learn how to study at the Silesian University of Technology. We always try to convince young people to choose science subjects and in the future engineering studies. That is why we often meet with pupils of primary and secondary schools at various types of workshops or in the implementation of joint projects – said the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education Prof. Anna Chrobok.
The Days of Gliwice Young Scientists are very popular; they are also an example of good cooperation between the city and educational institutions with the Silesian University of Technology.
- Silesian University of Technology is a very important part of Gliwice. Its tradition and achievements build this city. That is why we want as many young people as possible to study here and then stay and work in Gliwice, - said Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Budka, president of Gliwice.
The event is coordinated by 5 Gliwice schools: Primary School No. 1, Primary School No. 6, Primary School No. 13 and the 4th and 5th Secondary Comprehensive Schools.
- The Days of Gliwice Young Scientists have been organized together with Gliwice schools and the Silesian University of Technology for 12 years. For several months, pupils of the older classes of primary schools struggle with various competition issues in the field of science subjects, while preschoolers participate in workshops - says Agata Cira from the Group of Schools and Educational Institutions No. 1 in Gliwice, co-organizer of the 12th edition of the Days of Gliwice Young Scientists.
- By organizing this event, we want to arouse interest in children from an early age in science and natural sciences - she adds.
Project participants not only develop their knowledge but also can learn and improve their skills in the field of self-presentation.
- First of all, the benefits are that they are able to find themselves in the modern world, presenting their skills, showing that they can present themselves and sell their knowledge to the outside - emphasizes Przemysław Słowik, director of the School and Preschool Group number 5 in Gliwice, coordinator of the project.
- This event is an opportunity for young people to broaden their horizons, to get to know the world, both the closer and the further one. Thanks to this, in the future they will be better people, better employees, will understand the different conditions that appear in the world. It builds tolerance and empathy. If we are locked in a bubble, we only know what is in our country and we do not know what is next and the children want to know, they want us to explore new horizons together – said Danuta Małek, a teacher of the Primary School with Integration Units No. 3 in Gliwice, the supervisor of one of the groups participating in the project.
Pupils competed in the following competitions: Mathematical, Scratch programming, geographic, natural, biological, physical, and chemical programming, knowledge of society.
- The competition was very interesting, some questions were more difficult, some easier, but in this way, one could learn many interesting things - says Marek Gębal, participant of the project, pupil of 8th class of Primary School Nb. 3 in Gliwice. - We could also get to know the Silesian University of Technology, which is a very interesting University – adds Maciej Gawlik.
During the final gala of the Days of Gliwice Young Scientists there were also presentations of Student Science Clubs, which prepared chemical presentations and showed, among others, drones, and electric car.
