Final of the 8th Gliwice Young Scientists’ Days

The final of the 8th Gliwice Young Scientists’ Days took place at the Education and Congress Centre. The ceremony was attended by the Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Education Professor Wojciech Szkliniarz, the Vice Mayor of Gliwice, Ewa Weber and the youth participating in the competition.

The Gliwice Young Scientists’ Days is an educational project aimed at popularizing science among the youngest. It is addressed to pre-schoolers and students of the oldest grades of primary schools in Gliwice and the Gliwice district.

- We are glad that we can gather so many young, curious people here. We hope that some of them will visit the Silesian University of Technology, where they will continue their education. The university has its two academic secondary schools. We also attract young people through numerous scientific clubs, where they can learn the secrets of science and gain new competences - said during the ceremony, Vice Rector Professor Wojciech Szkliniarz.

15 schools took part in the Gliwice Young Scientists’ Days this year, and 33 students entered the final round. Students competed in a variety of science disciplines.

- It is a project that we are implementing together with the Silesian University of Technology. Thanks to this cooperation, young people can see what laboratories look like and how they work. But first of all, they take part in competitions related to chemistry, physics, nature or geography. As a result, young people begin to learn new things, develop their skills, and ultimately they can find out whether these will be directions that interest them - said Ewa Weber, the Vice Mayor of Gliwice.

Students competed in two stages - it was the Academy of the Youngest Scientist and League of Primary Schools, in which four competitions were held: mathematical competition, biological-geographical competition, chemical-physical competition and research work competition. - All these competitions were very popular among students, who presented a very high level of knowledge. We hope that such popularization of science and natural sciences will contribute to greater interest in technical majors already in secondary schools and then, in continuing education at the Silesian University of Technology - said Aneta Paździor, director of the 4th Secondary School in Gliwice, which was a co-organizer of the event.

One of the winners of the competition was Tomek from Primary School No. 9 in Gliwice. - I took part in the competition because I am interested in science, especially physics, chemistry and mathematics. The questions were quite difficult, but we managed to do that. In the future, I would like to study at the Silesian University of Technology, but before that, I would like to start at the Academic Secondary School of the Silesian University of Technology," says Tomek.

During today's final of the Gliwice Young Scientists’ Days, the students could learn about the editorial offer of the Silesian University of Technology and take part in a popular science show. The organizers of the competition are schools from Gliwice: 4th Secondary School, 5th Secondary School, Primary School No. 1, Primary School No. 6 and Primary School No. 13.
