Faculty of Mechanical Engineering student's invention in international Dyson Prize competition
Student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Piotr Niwiński, is taking part in the international competition for young engineer-inventors for the Dyson Prize. His invention is an augmented reality system display dedicated to medical services. The display is integrated into a mask and visor and meets WHO requirements for protection against the threat of the SARS-CoV-2 virus during an epidemic.
Those wishing to participate in the competition have the last days to apply - the call is open until July 6th.
The competition task is to construct something that solves a problem. The starting point can be something annoying that we face every day - or a problem on a global scale. The important thing is that the solution to the problem is effective and well thought out.
Piotr Niwiński and his mentor Marcin Januszka, PhD from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering decided to combine the developing augmented reality technology with a real problem - a pandemic situation.
Their innovative solution is an HMD display for an augmented reality (AR) system, integrated into a respirator. The solution is dedicated to medical staff operating in a high-risk environment of viral infections. The developed display solution allows the convenient presentation and collection of a variety of medical data about the patient exclusively in digital form.
The assumptions specify that the design is intended for use by medical services and can be used as an assist during long working hours.

The James Dyson Prize competition is one of a number of activities initiated by Sir James Dyson to show that inventors and engineers can change the world. Support in the form of cash prizes has already been given to the authors of more than 285 inventions. The competition is organised by the James Dyson Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting the education of engineers.
This year, the winners of the national stages will each receive PLN 27,000 and their projects will win a prestigious award. The winners of the international stage can win up to PLN 162,000.
The competition is open to individuals who hold (or have held for at least one semester in the last four years) undergraduate or postgraduate degree status in an engineering or design-related subject. These studies must be taught by a university located in the country or region where the James Dyson Award Competition takes place.
The call is still open until July 6th. Additional information can be found at www.jamesdysonaward.org.
