Excellent performance of students of Silesian University of Technology in Silesiada
As many as 15 gold medals were won by first year students of the Silesian University of Technology in Silesiada and on November 29 – December 1, 2024 they will perform in the National Final of the First Year Student Games in Warsaw.
15 gold medals is an excellent result - even better than last year's Silesiada, when there were 8 of them.. In total, our young athletes reached for 22 medals, because seven silver discs were added to the gold discs.
Let us remind you that Silesiada is an elimination for the National Final of the First Year Student Games, which this year at the turn of November and December will be held in Warsaw. Only the winners of individual disciplines who will represent AZS Katowice will qualify for it.
Young athletes competed in the following disciplines: women's and men's volleyball, women's and men's basketball, men's futsal, women's and men's swimming, women's and men's table tennis and women's and men's cross-country running. Only first-year students who are admitted to study for the first time can start in Silesiada.
In the sports hall of the Silesian University of Technology at 28 Kaszubska Street in Gliwice, traditionally, men's and women's volleyball competitions were held. Both teams won gold medals after a fantastic fight.
Our volleyball players went through the group stage, in which they defeated 2:0 the University of Silesia and the Medical University of Silesia. In the final they faced AWF Katowice, and the rivals won the first set. However, the brave students of our University did not break down and turned the fate of the competition, winning 2:1 after an extremely even finish.
“My players deserved to win in this difficult and very emotional game. They showed a great team game, complementing each other both in attack and defence. The whole “six” played a great match, and the fact that we played without “libero” emphasizes their success even more” – says the director of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology and the coach of volleyball players, Prof. Krzysztof Czapla.
The female volleyball team are Natalia Błachut, Milena Pawlas, Maria Buras, Martyna Chrobak, Laura Zamerlik, Oliwia Zalas, Amelia Gajdzik, Maria Rus, Michalina Kowaluk, Hanna Świercz, Maria Bezręcz and Maja Idzińska. Coach: Prof. Krzysztof Czapla.

The gold medals were also reached for by volleyball players, who in the decisive competition turned out to be better than the University of Silesia. On that day, the podium belonged to our university.
The male volleyball team: Paweł Dejnaka, Wiktor Wnuk, Błażej Skorysko, Jan Wołoszczuk, Szymon Tomecki, Filip Szyguła, Mikołaj Lysień, Jakub Bartosik, Igor Starnowski, Stanisław Mendrek, Lukasz Lupak and Kacper Strzelczyk. Coach Wojciech Czapla.
