End of the season of  the running and walking group ‘Silesian University of Technology & Friends’

From January to June, we got to know the campus and surroundings of the Silesian University of Technology from a running perspective. And it was all thanks to the meetings of the running and walking group, acting as part of the #sportwspiera(MY)naukowo campaign that was initiated by the Science Popularisation Centre. The last training session before the summer break took place on June 29.

The Silesian University of Technology & Friends  running and walking group is the first of its kind among the academic community, bringing together both staff, students and graduates of the University. It was initiated by the Science Popularisation Centre as part of the #sportwspiera(MY)naukowo campaign, which popularises interdisciplinary research combining modern technology, medicine and sport.

‘Sport is good for health, but sport is also science. The Silesian University of Technology shows that you can combine science and sport not only during working hours, but also outside them’, says prof. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, Director of the Science Popularisation Centre. ‘This is evidenced not only by our regular training sessions, but also by an event as part of the #sportwspiera(MY)naukowo campaign, at which we trained and had fun together in May and, above all, talked about health-promoting habits and science that supports sport’.

Members of the group met for weekly training sessions led by Aleksandra Bańbor - a multiple medallist at the Polish Academic Championships in seven disciplines, a former Polish swimming representative, and an ambassador of the Academic Sports Association. Under the trainer supervision, participants developed running techniques, strengthened their fitness, trained their running strength, and exercised stabilising and stretching exercises. They also had the opportunity for individual consultations, received tips on competing in running competitions, and were given a huge dose of motivation to complete sporting challenges. Meetings within the group also had a scientific cooperation dimension - due to the activities carried out by the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology and the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice.

After six months of training, the university runners are facing a summer break. The last of the meetings took place on Wednesday, June 29 - traditionally at 6:15 PM near the Rectorate. However, this does not mean putting your running shoes in the cupboard and you will certainly be able to spot people in the distinctive blue t-shirts with the yellow pinion around campus.

And for those who want to get started with running or marching, taking up physical activity on a regular basis or having a nice workout in good company, we invite you to the next meetings in September 2022. We will inform you about the post-holiday training sessions here: https://www.polsl.pl/rjo7-cpn/sport-wspieramy-naukowo/ and here: https://www.facebook.com/cpn.polsl
