Educational platform designed by scientists of the Silesian University of Technology has been awarded
Scientists from the Silesian University of Technology received a nomination in the category Synergy for education to the EDUinspirations 2024 award for the implementation of the project Strategic partnership for fostering circular economy approach in extractive industry related study programs.
The aim of the EDUInspirations competition is to select the most valuable projects, especially in the field of dissemination of results, sharing their experience and success with others. The EDUInspirations competition is implemented under the motto: “New Horizons in Education.” The award is so valuable because the nomination of candidates for the award was made by experts of the Foundation for the Development of the Education System. The projects were assessed according to criteria which, in accordance with the requirements of the European Commission, provide guidelines for the selection of best practices.
The nominated project was implemented by an international team, in which the Silesian University of Technology cooperated with: Montanuniversitaet Leoben from Austria, TU Delft from the Netherlands, Technical University of Tallinn from Estonia, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid from Spain and Polish institutions JSW Innowacje S.A. and COBANT Group S.A.
The main goal of the project was to create a comprehensive training platform that will help in modifying and updating educational programs related to the mining industry with the latest and practical knowledge related to the effective application of the principles of circular economy waste management.
- The composition of the project consortium allowed for a very broad approach to the problem of waste management in the mining industry, starting from energy minerals, including oil, gas, bituminous shale and coal, ending with common and metallic minerals - explained Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marcin Lutyński, project coordinator.
As a result, four intellectual results were created, i.e. the development and design of a model curriculum, a postgraduate program, an E-learning course, and a summary of applicable legal standards related to the mining industry.
- The implementation of the project allowed to create a European platform, the effects of which will be easily transposed into the curricula of universities and to strengthen cooperation between European universities with a similar teaching profile, while supporting companies using innovative process solutions - adds Prof. Lutyński.
In the future, this will allow for the training of engineers who are familiar with the concept of a circular economy and who will be able to apply this concept for the benefit of Europe.
Whether the solution will receive a prize will be decided by a special Awards Committee. The winners will be announced during a gala, which will take place in Warsaw on December 9, 2024, at the Museum of Polish History.
