Eco-mural was unveiled on the campus of the Silesian University of Technology
On the campus of the Silesian University of Technology, at 14, Akademicka Street in Gliwice, Eco-mural was unveiled. The project was created as part of the campaign “I am here, you are here,” implemented by the Silesian Voivodeship Self-Government in cooperation with universities of our region. The initiative is part of a wider project promoting the potential of the Silesian Voivodeship and active involvement of the young generation in the process of transformation of the region.
The location of the mural on the campus of the Silesian University of Technology is not accidental. Universities and their communities play an important role in shaping modern Silesia, based on knowledge, innovation, and responsible development. As noted by the Vice-Rector for General Affairs of the Silesian University of Technology Prof. Bożena Skołud, the mural shows the University as an integral part of the Silesian landscape and local community.
– The Mural shows the Silesian University of Technology in the Silesian environment, in particular in Gliwice. It is important for students to feel integrated into the city, and this space is open to everyone. There is no city without students and there are no students without this city – emphasized the Vice-Rector.
As she pointed out, the mural made with the use of special anti-smog paints emphasizes the innovative character of the University, which develops courses of study corresponding to contemporary challenges related to environmental protection and energy transformation.
– At the Silesian University of Technology, we develop new technologies and education courses related to sustainable development and modern energy sources – said Prof. Bożena Skołud.
The project “I am here, you are here” is to draw attention to the role of young residents as co-creators of the future of the region. The Silesian Voivodeship is currently undergoing a process of transformation, which includes not only the economy, but also environmental and social issues. Eco-mural is an artistic symbol of these changes, and at the same time an incentive to talk about the direction of development of the region and the place of young people in this process.
– We want to show young people that the Silesian Voivodeship offers many opportunities for development, learning, and work. It is a place worth to bet on and where it is worth pursuing one’s dreams – says Beata Goleśna from the Marshal’s Office of the Silesian Voivodeship.
As she points out, the location of the mural on the campus of the university is not accidental. It is intended to remind about the role of education and the young generation in building the future of the region.
- This is a positive message to young people that this is where their future is. We want to interest them in the transformation of the region and show that they can be part of it – emphasizes the representative of the Marshal’s Office.
The author of the mural is Leonid Podolyak, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lviv. Marta Kostiv participated in the painting of the mural.
– The Mural presents students and refers to the idea of the whole campaign. It is supposed to attract the eyes of passers-by, encourage to scan the QR code and read more about the whole initiative – emphasized the artist.
An additional advantage of the project is its ecological character.
– Photocatalytic paints, also called anti-smog paints, were used to make the mural. They purify the air from nitrogen oxides, and it is assumed that a square meter of surface covered with such paint works similarly to a medium-sized tree – explained Bartosz Podlewski, co-organizer of the ceremony.
Just after the unveiling of the mural at the Igry Meadow of the Silesian University of Technology, a picnic took place as part of the campaign “I am here, you are here.” There were performances by the Mining Brass Orchestra “Bytom” and the band Frele.
