Droniada Junior Final at a High Level
Programming, racing, obstacles and simulators – all this awaited the participants of the final of the 2nd edition of Droniada Junior, which took place on May the 30th at the Mechanical and Electrical School Complex named after Tadeusz Kościuszko in Rybnik. Silesian University of Technology was the partner of the event.
This is the second edition of Droniada Junior, one of the paths of the ongoing Droniada. This is a competition that inspires children and young people to discover the world of modern technologies and aviation. This event enjoyed great interest last year. This time, however, the number of applications exceeded the organizers' wildest expectations. Almost 140 teams in three age categories signed up for the first stage, which was the Great Drone Knowledge Test. These are: pupils (4th -6th grade of primary school), cadets (7th -8th grade of primary school) and juniors (secondary schools). Ultimately, after competing in the test and elimination rounds, 19 teams from all over Poland qualified for the final.
This time, three competitions awaited the participants.
- “In the final, in addition to the programming competition and the obstacle course, there was also a new one – a flight simulator “- explains Dr Eng. Aldona Rosner from the Rybnik Branch of the Silesian University of Technology, co-organizer of Droniada. – “We are pleased that the second edition has met with such interest. We know that since the qualifying round the teams have been working together and training to perform as well as possible. Compared to last year, participants have mastered programming even better. A new obstacle course also awaited them, which was more difficult, because after all, that's what the finale is all about.”

The day began with a panel discussion “Drones in the service of the community – education as a key to the development of drone services” with the participation of representatives of the Silesian University of Technology, local government and emergency services. The official opening of the final was attended by, among others, the Director of the Silesian University of Technology Branch in Rybnik, Dr Hab. Zygmunt Łukaszczyk.
- “This event is so cool because it fully shows the evolutionary and technological path in the world of drones. This would not be possible without human minds and ideas, and this time it was young people who wanted to present themselves in the best possible way and show their talents” - says Prof. Zygmunt Łukaszczyk.

There were also additional attractions waiting for all participants. In one of the rooms they could talk, among others, with representatives of the SKN Aerospace Engineering science club.
- “We presented various types of drones, a fragment of a drone with mounted photovoltaic panels and toroidal propellers, which our students optimize” - says Jacek Rduch from SKN Aerospace Engineering.

The competition between two-person teams was extremely fierce, as everyone fought for the impressive "droniadki" (trophies), or cups for the best teams. They were funded by the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Prof. Marek Gzik.
The Director of the Mechanical and Electrical School Complex named after Tadeusz Kościuszko in Rybnik Marek Holona was pleased with the possibility to organise the event.
- “It is a great honour for our institution that we could organise a national competition here. The youth had the opportunity to showcase skills that will certainly pay off in the future. I keep my fingers crossed for them,” - said Director Marek Holona.
