Drones helped to find a missing dog

It was a unique search action! Using their drones, SUT graduates Tomasz Siwy and Patryk Czech found a lost dog! The dog was found 8 km away from home!

Without the drones, this action could not have been successful! After 5 days and 8 km from home, Baster of the St. Bernard breed was found. The dog wandered from Siewierz to Myszków.

Tomasz Siwy, a graduate and an employee of our university and also the owner of a company dealing with the implementation of drones, received an email inquiry from Martyna on the evaluation of animal search services using drones. In a short conversation, it was revealed that her St. Bernard breed dog, Baster, had gone missing

- Martyna contacted us when all other traditional methods failed. We were impressed by her approach to the case and offered to carry out an exceptional charity action. We are also animal lovers, so we suggested making a donation to an animal shelter if the dog was found," says Tomasz Siwy.

The following day, Tomasz Siwy and Patryk Czech joined the search operation. Unfortunately, there were unfavourable weather conditions. It was freezing cold and there was a gusty wind that quickly drained the drone's batteries.

- After arriving on the spot, speaking to the family of the missing dog and a pre-mission briefing, we arrived at the first selected location. After several flights, we were convinced that Baster was not there. We went to the second area, near Myszków, 8 km from Baster's house. We separated again and luckily we noticed paw prints left on fresh snow. After some time we spotted the lost dog - says Tomasz Siwy

Unfortunately, the frightened Baster was running away from people and calls. Fortunately, the drones helped not to let him out of our sight. - Eventually, Martyna managed to take over Baster when we were running out of the last battery in the drone - adds Tomasz Siwy.

The area that had to be searched was very large. But determination, faith in success and commitment and skills of the search team helped to find the dog. In this action the following persons took part: Tomasz Siwy, Patryk Czech, Baster's family, Marcin Gajda, Marcin Kuśmierz and 3 drones, Mavic class (Air and Enterprise).

Tomasz Siwy is an employee of our University, works as the Head of Training at the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Centre and is one of the first founding members of the High Flyers student scientific association.
