On Saturday, October 12th, the Researchers’ Night will take place in the European City of Science Katowice 2024. This year’s edition of the event, organized annually by the Silesian University of Technology, was joined by six Silesian universities, associated in the Katowice – City of Science Academic Consortium.

This Saturday, Silesian universities will open their laboratories, lecture halls, and invite the inhabitants of the region to take part in workshops, demonstrations, lectures, exhibitions, and many other popular science activities that will bring closer the activities of scientists, PhD students and students.
“The success of the Researchers’ Night, which has been organized for many years at the Silesian University of Technology, is that we convinced other universities from the European City of Science to join this initiative. Every year, the event is attended by people of different ages - children, students, parents and grandparents, who come to see what the university does and get acquainted with scientific achievements about which they have heard, for example, in the media” - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof Marek Pawełczyk.
In this year’s night, scientists from the Silesian University of Technology, University of Economics in Katowice, University of Silesia, Medical University of Silesia, J. Kukuczka University of Physical Education in Katowice, and K. Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice will take part.
- “Thanks to the fact that we join the forces of Silesian universities, we are able to show science in the best, Silesian edition. There will be something good for everyone, both in terms of age, content, and subject matter. Each of our universities has its own specific character. Silesian University of Technology also has a lot to offer because we are very interdisciplinary. There will be a Formula Student car simulator, a flight and railway simulator, but also mobile robots, workshops on how to clean the air and even Scottish dances. So, the subject matter will be very diverse,” said Professor Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, – director of the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology.
Events such as the Researchers’ Night present the scientific potential of Silesia and universities in the region.
“It is important to show that our region has a future ahead of it and that we are able to build this future ourselves. “It is up to us to use our talents for the future and for the good of our region. Such events are a good opportunity to instil in the youngest scientists the bug” - noted Prof. Tomasz Pietrzykowski, Vice-Rector for International and National Cooperation at the University of Silesia.
The popularization of science attracts young people to their scientific careers and gives birth to talents and new ideas – adds Danuta Kamińska, Vice-President of the Management Board of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis.
“We are engaged in the Researchers’ Night because it is a real investment in the future. As a region in a process of continuous transformation, we must focus on science. Scientific innovation is the engine of economic development. Thanks to this, attractive jobs are created and our competitiveness on the map of the country is growing. There are 26 public and private universities in the GZM area. We have 90 thousand students – more than in Lodz or Tri-City” – emphasized Danuta Kamińska.
This year’s Researchers’ Night will be held in Gliwice, Katowice, Zabrze, Rybnik, Bytom, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and Cieszyn. To facilitate access to the participants of the event, you will be able to use public transport free of charge on this day. A pass, which is given to each participant at registration, entitles to a free ride. It must be presented at the time of any inspection, in paper or electronic form.
