CYBERhackathon and CYBERpoligon ISAC-GIG are behind us

The Silesian University of Technology was the place of important talks on cybersecurity for three days. All thanks to a series of events that focused on online security. On June 21, the CYBERhackathon was held at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation, and on June 22-23, the ISAC-GIG CYBERpoligon, accompanied by a scientific conference.

Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology have been dealing with cybersecurity for years. This is one of the fields of the future that requires specialist knowledge and continuous training of staff. To meet these challenges, on June 21, CYBERhackathon 2023 was organized for the first time in the country at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation.

- The purpose of this event is to show cyber threats and the impact of modern technologies on our everyday lives, on our private and professional security. Cyberattacks on strategic industrial units in a region or country may consequently lead to dangerous events, including a threat to human health and life. Therefore, this is a very important issue and we are glad that many representatives of the industry visited us to talk about it - said dr hab. Eng. Małgorzata Wyganowska, prof. SUT - vice-dean for education at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation.

Students from all over the province competed in the CYBERhackathon, and they had to solve competition tasks in the allotted time. Thus, the participants had to show off their skills in programming, design and new technologies. The students of the School Complex No. 6 named after King Jan III Sobieski in Jastrzębie-Zdrój: Paweł Orlik, Sebastian Kura and Adam Ciszewski were best to deal with the tasks.

In turn, on June 22, the ISAC-GIG CYBER training ground was held at the Silesian University of Technology. It was an opportunity for employees of IT departments of companies from the mining and energy sector to exchange experiences and practically verify the acquired knowledge in the field of security against cyberattacks. Teams competed solving tasks in the field of Linux and SCADA operating systems.

During the CYBER training ground, the conference " Digital, Safe Silesia 2030 - cybersecurity management strategy in the era of civilization transformation" was also held. The talks included on information security, consolidation in cybersecurity and cybersecurity management strategies.

The event, co-organized by the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation and JSW IT Systems, was held under the patronage of the Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin - Minister of State Assets, Janusz Cieszyński - Minister of Digitization and the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. dr hab. Eng. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

 - The Silesian University of Technology was established to support the development of industry in the region, and cybersecurity is currently one of the most important problems that not only every citizen, but also enterprises have to face. We try to ensure that the University of Technology not only observes these changes, but that our scientists participate in processes related to cybersecurity and educate future specialists in this field - said the rector of the Silesian University of Technology.

In response to the growing demand for specialists in the field of cybersecurity, a letter of intent was signed on June 21, starting cooperation between the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology and JSW Szkolenie i Górnictwo Sp. z o. o.

- We are aware that we need to recruit staff, which is why we value cooperation with the Silesian University of Technology. We are signing an agreement, after which we hope that students will be better prepared to work in our company, in the mining industry, but also in the implementation of projects - said Piotr Buffi, training and development director at JSW Szkolenie i Górnictwo, after signing the agreement.

The cooperation is to include, among others: modernization of the model of effective education, learning and improving the professional qualifications of industry 4.0 employees, by engaging in the process of changing the stakeholders of vocational education in the environment of universities and industry institutions and companies, as well as integrating environments interested in the development of education and raising professional qualifications of industry 4.0 employees.
