Cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology with the Central Office of Measures

The Silesian University of Technology signed a cooperation agreement with the Central Office of Measures concerning the implementation of the research project "Research and development of digital methods of four-port impedance comparison". As part of the agreement, scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering will adapt the infrastructure of the GUM (Central Office of Measures) laboratory in the field of impedance comparison. Scientists will carry out work in the field of metrology for companies operating in various industries, in particular, in electrical engineering and medicine.

- This is another agreement between the Silesian University of Technology and the Central Office of Measures as part of the "Polish Metrology" project. We appreciate this cooperation very much. Today's agreement concerns a project submitted by scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering under the name "Research and development of digital methods of four-port impedance comparison". The value of this project is over PLN 460,000 - said prof. Janusz Kotowicz, Vice-Rector for Cooperation with Civic and Economic Environment

As part of the agreement, scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology will adapt the infrastructure of the GUM Laboratory in the field of impedance comparison. The lab will carry out measurements in the field of optoelectronics for companies operating in various industries, in particular electrical engineering and medicine.

– The Silesian University of Technology is one of the leading technical universities in the country, not only because of its historical background, but also because of the know-how inherent in this environment. This project is extremely important to us because it concerns the possibility of expanding the measuring range of our design devices in the field of impedance measurement. These lab units have already been developed together with the Silesian University of Technology, now we are entering the next stage of this cooperation, which has been going on for many years. We have common successes and achievements, we are able to generate solutions that will be unrivalled on a national scale and competitive on an international scale - said prof. Jacek Semaniak, President of the Central Office of Measures.

umowa z GUM 1

The standard  lab unit being developed as part of the project is used to implement the unit of measure of capacitance and inductance. – It is used to transfer the value of a measurement unit to lower-order standards and precise measuring equipment used in laboratories in various industries (especially in the armament and electrotechnical industries), as well as by the medical industry. As part of the project, the current standards comparison units at GUM will be equipped with new four-port resistance standards as well as a new two-output multiplexer and a system of permuted capacitances. The new software with the correction of non-linearity errors will contribute to improving the functionality of the comparison system - noted prof. Marian Kampik, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

The agreement signed with the Silesian University of Technology is one of 26 agreements concluded by the Central Office of Measures with universities in Poland under the "Polish Metrology" programme.  – This program is to strengthen the research and implementation potential of GUM. In this case, we are dealing with the expansion of the unit, which was previously created by scientists from the Silesian University of Technology. Models and research work for enterprises will be performed at this unit - said Andrzej Kurkiewicz, Director of the Department of Innovation and Development of the GUM.

The project "Research and development of digital four-port impedance comparison methods" will be implemented until July 2024. - As part of the program, research work is also carried out at the Silesian University of Technology, especially design work, software development and validation of the comparison system - added Prof. Marian Kampik. It is planned to organize a discussion panel and a working meeting as part of this year's conference Basic Problems of Metrology, which will be held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering on May 18th -19th , 2023.
