Conference in Zabrze about the cooperation of engineers and medics
At the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in Zabrze, on the 23rd of June 2025, the 10th International Conference on Information Technology in Biomedicine began. It brings together scientists in the field of engineering, bioengineering and modern technologies and representatives of the world of medicine.
For the tenth time in Zabrze, engineers meet with medics at a conference to talk about what the medical world needs from engineers and what engineers can offer them.
In the agenda of this year’s edition, the organizers of the conference pointed out that over the past decades we have witnessed a radical change as medical information systems have been integrated to address the essence of medicine, including outpatient and hospital patient care, computer-assisted diagnostics and treatment, telemedicine and home care.
Previous meetings and conferences, as well as cooperation with medical centres, have demonstrated the need to create a platform that integrates researchers and technologists, whose efforts are focused on overcoming the gap between modern information technology and clinical medicine. This is why the Zabrze conference has been held periodically for ten years.
- Scientists from abroad come and visit us. This year we have guests from Germany and Italy, - said Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Ewa Piętka, organizer of the conference.
This year’s conference was divided into several thematic modules.
- One of the sessions, which will be conducted by the Information Processing Centre from Warsaw, will concern the detection of prostate cancer using artificial intelligence. Both engineers and doctors will benefit from this knowledge – she added. More than a hundred people attended the conference, including not only scientists, but also doctors and even physiotherapists. Everyone from the conference can get advice for work, related to computer analysis of medical data -imaging, multimodal, speech signal, etc.

An example of how to process medical data in order to help patients faster and even prevent diseases was presented by Dr Rafał Jóźwiak from the Information Processing Centre of the PIB.
- For the last three years we have been implementing a project financed by the NCBiR, which concerned supporting the diagnosis of prostate cancer. We will share our results, show you how we can use our data processing methods for diagnosis, but also for education about the disease. We developed a special platform for this purpose – said Dr Jóźwiak.
Discussions on the technological aspects of medicine will last three days. The conference in Zabrze will last until June 25, 2025.
