Clean Oder River

Clean Oder River starts in Silesia – challenges for Environmental Engineering, Mining and Power Engineering – a mini-Congress took place at the Silesian University of Technology as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. Its aim was to introduce representatives of local governments, industry, provincial authorities, and social activists to proposals for sustainable solutions to key environmental challenges of the Upper Oder region.

During the congress, participants had the opportunity to actively participate in diagnosing key problems related to effective remediation of Kłodnica and the Gliwice Canal. The meeting also became an arena of expert debates, during which topics such as: “Hydrological aspects and water quality in the Upper Oder catchment” and “Sustainable mining and energy and water resources of Silesia.” As a result of the conducted analyses and panel discussions, a set of the following proposals were developed, which will be sent to the participants in the form of a questionnaire:

1. Creation of an early warning and monitoring system of water using advanced photonic methods and development of scenarios for action in crisis situations.

2. Strengthening of cooperation between diverse environments and stakeholders to achieve synergies between short- and long-term activities, particularly through the use of nature-based solutions.

3. Improvement of retention and dosing systems for the discharge of salted water into water bodies, taking into account actual flows.

4. Removal of legislative barriers preventing the adaptation of post-mine infrastructure for energy storage.

5. Using resources such as mining water heat and methane, and hydro-technical infrastructure and decommissioned mines to meet the energy needs of local communities.

6. Identification of wild sources of pollution in Kłodnica, especially above the Bytom estuary and extension of monitoring of micro-pollutants in Kłodnica and Gliwice Canal waters, including pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics.

The results of the survey will allow prioritization of actions and will be an impulse for further work on improving the ecological condition of Kłodnica and the Gliwice Canal and the protection of the Oder as a key water resource of the region. The Congress showed that interdisciplinary cooperation and involvement of various environments are the key to effectively solving environmental challenges that affect not only the region of Silesia, but also the whole of Poland and Europe. The patronage of the minCongress was taken by: Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Mayor of Gliwice, Governor of Silesia, and Minister of Infrastructure.
