Chess workshops at the Silesian University of Technology
Over 300 secondary school pupils from Gliwice and students participated in chess workshops organised at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation of the Silesian University of Technology. It was one of many events prepared for young people at this faculty.
After a two-year break, events organised for schools returned to the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation. On 12 May, a chess workshop was organised. The event took place under the patronage of the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk.
Over 300 secondary school pupils and students visited The Silesian University of Technology. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Franciszek Plewa, the Vice-Dean, Professor Małgorzata Wyganowska; and the Head of the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Materials Extraction, Professor Piotr Bańka, inaugurated the event.
During the workshop, two-person teams consisting of a pupil and a student were selected. Their task was to solve six chess competitions. Students from the "Bezpieczna Ściana" (transl. "Safe Wall") Scientific Association, for whom chess is a game that improves intellectual abilities and arithmetic skills, provided substantive support for the participants.
Aneta Grodzicka, PhD, and the staff of the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Materials Extraction organised the workshop; Anna Kohut, the founder of the Hetman Gliwice Chess School, chess coach and referee, multiple junior women medallist, finalist in the European and World Championships, conducted the event.
