Chemists from the Silesian University of Technology in training at the Military Unit of Commandos in Lubliniec

The High-Energy and Electroactive Materials Team from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Process Design of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology took part in the training of commandos in Lubliniec. At the end of April, at the training ground area of the Military Commandos Unit in Lubliniec, a specialist professional training was held, devoted to activities on the explosion site of a vehicle or an unmanned aircraft. The training was attended by police officers from the Silesian Voivodeship, officers of the criminal service, experts of forensic laboratories and representatives of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice. The aim of the project was to improve the cooperation of the services and improve the competence in the field of recognition and testing of explosives.

The organizer of the project was the Police Staff of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Katowice together with the Military Unit of Commandos in Lubliniec, with the support of lecturers of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. The exercises were attended by officers of Non-Permanent Mining and Pyrotechnic Reconnaissance groups of the Silesian Voivodeship, police officers of the Criminal Laboratory of the Provincial Police Headquarters (KWP) in Katowice, officers of the Criminal Division of the KWP in Katowice and representatives of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice.

As we read on the website of the Silesian Police, during the two-day training participants improved the procedures related to taking actions on the site of an explosion of a vehicle or an unmanned aircraft. The exercises were aimed at preparing officers of various divisions to cooperate effectively during events of a particularly dangerous nature. An important element of the training was also the maintenance of a high level of coordination of services activities and the exchange of experiences between participants.

- During the classes, the police got acquainted with the techniques used in the examination of explosives and devices, as well as improved the skills of using specialized equipment for detecting contamination in the field of CBRNE. The training also allowed to supplement the knowledge on algorithms of conduct on the scene and standardize the procedures used by representatives of the Police and Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice.

The joint exercises were also an opportunity to integrate police officers with representatives of other services and institutions, also from the Silesian University of Technology, which is important when conducting real actions requiring fast and effective cooperation.

Police officers constantly improve their qualifications by participating in specialized training and practical exercises. Regular skills development, exchange of experience and cooperation with experts and other services allow to respond more effectively to contemporary threats and improve the safety of the inhabitants of the region. The Silesian University of Technology is happy to participate in these initiatives.
