Ceremonial doctoral and habilitation promotions
On May 25th, 2024, Education and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology hosted a solemn doctoral and habilitation promotion. Degrees of habilitated doctor and doctor were awarded to those who obtained these degrees in 2023. The event was enriched by the award of the Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology to Professor Zbigniew Dąbrowski.
In 2023, 19 people received the degree of a habilitated doctor at the Silesian University of Technology, and 178 people received the degree of a doctor.
- “With great joy and a sense of great satisfaction I welcome you at a unique event in the life of our university, - the ceremony of doctoral and habilitation promotion -, which is the recognition of research achievements and scientific advancement of yet another group of young scientists” - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk at the beginning of doctoral promotion.
“Today we have 197 great reasons to celebrate. This is how many doctoral dissertations and habilitation proceedings ended with a great success in 2023. It is an excellent testimony of your knowledge, competence and qualifications and a huge strengthening of the scientific potential of our Alma Mater, which stands on the threshold of the 80th anniversary of its existence” – said the Rector.
“The ceremony of awarding doctoral and habilitation promotions is a great celebration of science” – emphasized the Rector. “Science that raises bold questions, forms groundbreaking hypotheses, science based on vision, determination, perseverance, and passion, without which scientific research cannot be conducted.”
The world is at a crossroads today. Global threats are causing a loss of sense, a break in human bonds, a weakening of community significance and the collapse of authority. These phenomena do not bypass the academic environment, and universities have to deal with them, seeking solutions in the spirit of sustainable development and social responsibility. The role of the university is growing, understood both as a source of inspiration, beneficial economic and social changes, as well as a place that restores the sense of security and gives the perspective of stable and satisfactory functioning in the changing reality.
During doctoral and habilitation promotions, the title of Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology was also awarded. This year it was awarded to Professor Zbigniew Dąbrowski, a scientific authority, co-creator of the field of knowledge, which is technical diagnostics, a valued academic teacher, who is well-appreciated for the scientific development of employees of the Silesian University of Technology.
The ceremony of awarding the Honorary Diploma of the Silesian University of Technology was led by the Rector-elect, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk.
- “Professor Zbigniew Dąbrowski is an outstanding Polish scientist specializing in mechanics, construction, and operation of machines. He has achieved significant successes in solving the problems of machine silence and technical diagnostics, he has created an original scientific school dedicated to non-linear problems, in the construction and diagnosis of machines. Professor Zbigniew Dąbrowski promoted eleven doctors and three of them subsequently obtained the degree of habilitated doctor. He is the author or co-author of about 280 scientific publications, including eighty monographs. It is worth emphasizing the professor’s involvement in the organization of the didactic process, he made, among other things, a lasting contribution to the teaching methodology in the field of construction and operation of machines” – said Prof. Pawełczyk.
After awarding the Honorary Diploma of the Professor of the Silesian University of Technology, there were solemn promotions, which were conducted by Prof. Bogusław Łazarz, Vice-Rector for General Affairs.
- “Dear Doctors, with the award of the honourable degree of Doctor, you accept certain duties, but above all the rights and privileges associated with this dignity. Doctoral diplomas will be given to you as the confirmation of granting this dignity. The ceremony of awarding the diplomas will be performed by the Rector prof Arkadiusz Mężyk” – said during the ceremony Prof. Łazarz.
The ceremonial doctoral and habilitation promotions ended with a short performance by the Silesian University of Technology Choir.
