Ceremonial doctoral promotion
On May 20th, at the Education and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, a ceremonial Doctoral Promotion was held once again, during which the diplomas of habilitated doctor and doctor were awarded to persons who obtained their degrees in 2022. 31 persons, including 13 women, obtained the degree of habilitated doctor, and 106 persons, including 29 women, obtained the degree of doctor. During the event, Fr. prof. Józef Bremer received the title of Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology.
Doctoral promotions and habilitations are one of the most important events at the University, taking place on the anniversary of the establishment of the Silesian University of Technology, which falls on May 24th. The ceremony was attended by the University authorities: The Rector prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk and Vice-Rector for Cooperation with the Civic and Economic Environment prof. Janusz Kotowicz, Vice-Rector for General Affairs prof. Bogusław Łazarz, Vice-Rector for Science and Development prof. Marek Pawełczyk and Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz.
– I am very pleased to welcome you on the eve of the seventy-eighth birthday of our Alma Mater. Our community is enriched by more doctors and habilitated doctors who increase the scientific and intellectual potential of our university - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.
Since May 2022, i.e. from the previous promotion, 13 female scientists and 18 male scientists have obtained the degree of habilitated doctor. 106 people obtained a doctoral degree, including 29 women and 77 men. - I am glad that since 1952, when the first woman obtained a doctoral degree at the Silesian University of Technology, the number of women gaining scientific promotion at our University has been systematically increasing - said the rector.
In his speech, Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk stressed the importance of the Silesian University of Technology for the development of the region. - For 78 years we have been creating a scientific basis for the development of industry and new technologies. We constantly improve our scientific excellence. Since 2019, we have been implementing the prestigious Research University Initiative of Excellence program, which is associated with a great opportunity for development, but also responsibility. We participate in international European projects - we co-create the European University EURECA-PRO. The university is also developing through Priority Research Areas, more and more employees, especially young ones, carry out research as part of pro-quality programs, and their effects are implemented and used in industry - said prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.
The Rector also emphasized the participation of the Silesian University of Technology in awarding the city of Katowice with the title of the European City of Science 2024.
After the solemn oath, the doctors received their diplomas from the rector. Among them, dr hab. Eng. Katarzyna Stolecka-Antczak, who wrote her habilitation thesis at the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering. – I am happy that after my PhD I managed to reach the next stage of my professional career. I hope to achieve my next goals here at the Silesian University of Technology, she added. Habilitation thesis of dr hab. Eng. Katarzyna Stolecka-Antczak, concerned issues related to the identification of hazards in the use of fuels. - I deal with risk assessment, analysis of hazards when using various substances, in the processes of transport or storage or end use - she explained.
During today's ceremony of doctoral and habilitation promotions, the title of Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology was also awarded. This year it was given to Fr. prof. Józef Bremer. This title is awarded to outstanding scientists and academic teachers who contribute to building the prestige and development of the Silesian University of Technology with their attitude, activity and commitment.
