Awards in the Golden Medal of Chemistry competition for students of the Silesian University of Technology
We are pleased to announce that in the nationwide competition for the best diploma thesis organized by the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the second place and the Silver Medal and the finalists’ award went to Jakub Pawlikowski, while the distinction went to Sonia Wardejn.
The competition was addressed to the authors of innovative undergraduate or engineering works of cognitive and applied importance in the field of chemistry (and on the border of chemistry and biology or chemistry and physics), written and defended in Poland, in the academic year 2024/2025.
Jakub Pawlikowski, a bioinformatics student at the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology, was appreciated for his research on how cells react to oxidative stress, especially when some genes are turned off and how these processes can be influenced at the cellular level, to protect cells from death.
Our student’s diploma thesis entitled “The role of nuclear factors in the induction of programmed cell death in cells modified using CRISPR/Cas9 technology” was appreciated. It was supervised by Dr Eng. Małgorzata Adamiec-Organiściok and MSc Eng. Magdalena Węgrzyn, who presented the results of research related to the process of ferroptosis, a special type of programmed cell death closely related to iron metabolism.
The results of the research presented in the paper are important for the development of new methods of treatment of serious diseases.
In the competition, the DuPont distinction was awarded to Sonia Wardejn, a student of the Faculty of Chemistry.
Congratulations on your success and we wish you continued growth of your career!
