Award for the Silesian University of Technology team for the seaside promenade design in Ustka
The team from the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology composed of Tomasz Bradecki PhD, Eng. Arch., Piotr Szendera Eng. Arch., Mateusz Grela Eng. Arch. and Adam Zbroiński Eng. Arch.- won the second prize in the competition for the design of "Promenada Nadmorska" in Ustka (transl. “Seaside Promenade in Ustka”). The competition was organised by the Municipality of Ustka and the Słupsk Branch of the Association of Polish Architects.
The aim of the competition was to rebuild the existing promenade in Ustka, together with the park area, and also design solutions to tidy up the existing spatial chaos.
The design was supposed to include a new commercial building with an underground car park, as well as a new tourist attraction, which is the pier. The building should have been designed to include various food, health and other services.
The area included in the competition was about 5.7 ha, located in the eastern part of Ustka, at the mouth of the river Słupia.
The organisers expected a modern, functional, resident- and tourist-friendly urban plan, as well as a modern architectural form, which could become a landmark and symbol of the resort and tourist destination.
- The main design objectives were to make the area more attractive by creating additional leisure, commercial and entertainment areas. It was very important to develop the green areas in such a way as not to disturb the existing trees but at the same time to offer new places for leisure or walking. We also made efforts to ensure that the proposed architecture did not dominate the surroundings, but was rather a complement and continuation. As a result, we designed a building with an extensive green roof, with walking trails and panoramic terraces overlooking the sea - say the designers.
The Promenade in Ustka is one of the most representative public spaces on the coast. It has great potential, but there are places that need revitalization. Ustka is developing dynamically and is a popular tourist destination that attracts many tourists. - It would be worthwhile for the main seaside promenade to gain new quality, including a new representative building, as well as a pier. Ustka may become an equally attractive point on the map as Świnoujście or Sopot - emphasize the authors.
- Undoubtedly, the location and the competition itself were very attractive, so we decided to participate. We found the subject of the revitalization of public spaces very interesting and we already have experience in similar projects. Additionally, the environment and surroundings covered by the competition were very appealing, as well as the characteristics of Ustka as a typical entertainment and leisure place. This, in turn, gave us a wide range of possibilities for creating a concept of a seaside promenade for such a city - add the architects.
For their project, the team from the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology composed of: Tomasz Bradecki PhD, Eng. Arch., Piotr Szendera Eng. Arch., Mateusz Grela Eng. Arch. and Adam Zbroiński Eng. Arch. - won the second prize and PLN 20 000. The jury did not award the first prize, but three third prizes (ex aequo) in the amount of PLN 10 000 each. They were awarded to: DNA Architekci Dominika Skołuba from Gliwice, Jan Heymer MSc, Eng. Arch., Wacław Marat MSc from Warsaw, Tomasz Kałuc MSc, Eng., Arch. from Słupsk, and Karol Zydor MSc Eng. Arch. from London.
