At the Silesian University of Technology, we are about to break the Polish record
We invite you to the third National Day of Materials Engineering (ODIM) at the Silesian University of Technology, which will take place on March 28th, 2025. This year, the accompanying event is organized by three faculties of the Silesian University of Technology: Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering located in Gliwice and Faculty of Materials Engineering located in Katowice.
The main event of the National Day of Materials Engineering (ODIM) at the Silesian University of Technology 2025 is the beating of the Polish record in the category “Most people solving crossword puzzles simultaneously”.
- The event will take place after the opening lectures, to which we invite students and school pupils from our region. In the previous editions of ODIM 2023 and 2024, two Polish records were obtained in the category “The greatest lesson in materials engineering”. Silesian University of Technology had a significant share in this record because the pupils participating in the lesson at the Silesian University of Technology accounted for nearly 25% of all participants in the whole of Poland in 20 scientific units and universities.
This year, due to the 100th anniversary of the publication of the first Polish crossword puzzle in “Kurier Warszawski”, it was decided to make ODIM more attractive. Therefore, the organizers decided to encourage young people to an intellectual game with slogans about technologies and smart materials.
Participation in events related to ODIM 2025 requires registration and confirmation of availability of places from the organizers. The organization of this event is an initiative of 15 renowned universities and 6 research institutes from all over Poland aimed at popularizing education in the field of technology and materials engineering as a field of science and higher education with a huge research and industrial potential in the following years.
Detailed information about the program of the event at each Faculty is provided in the links below:

The National Day of Materials Engineering is an excellent opportunity to emphasize the importance of this field of science, promote its achievements and increase public awareness of material engineering and the role it plays. The organizers want to attract young people, mainly secondary school pupils, who, taking studies in materials engineering, will have a chance to enter the fascinating world of materials science and manufacturing technology.
It is worth recalling that materials engineering deals with the design, production and research of various materials and related production technologies, both existing and those in the area of conceptual consideration. Its aim is to search for material and technological solutions that will allow the best use of material properties in many industries, including aviation, automotive, electronics, energy, household appliances and medicine.
In the academic year 2025/2026, two new fields of study related to materials engineering are planned to be launched at the Silesian University of Technology.
In Gliwice, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, this will be the field: “Innovative Technologies in Industry” and the second planned interdisciplinary field of study is called “Green Technologies.” More details about the new courses will be available soon in the information sheet for candidates for studies.
We recommend renowned and long-running “Materials Engineering” course at the Faculty of Materials Engineering in Katowice and the “Materials Engineering and Technologies” course at the second degree of studies (master’s degree) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Gliwice to all those interested in materials engineering and technology studies.
