Architecture, arts and crafts at the Mosaic Festival

Exhibitions, concerts, lectures, and also an exhibition and educational stands - awaited the participants of the Mosaic Festival, which is the 1st Gliwice Festival of Architecture, Arts and Crafts, opened on Wednesday at noon.

The square in front of the Faculty of Architecture was filled with a large number of students, scientists and guests. Visitors could view exhibition stands with handicrafts such as ceramics and crocheted clothing, and also take part in pottery, painting and drawing workshops.

An exhibition featuring ceramic mosaics inspired by the architecture of Gliwice and Silesia, made by interior design students during field trips to the Pottery Centre in Medynia Głogowska, was also presented there. They were prepared under the guidance of: Wojciech Słodowy MSc, Eng., Arch., Anna Osadnik MSc, Joanna Zabawa-Krzypkowska PhD, Eng., Arch., Agnieszka Pluszczewicz MSc and Krzysztof Groń PhD.

This trip and the work on the ceramic mosaics inspired the first-year interior design students to organise the festival.

The Mosaic Festival is organised as part of the research project “Art and Design in Public Space”. - Art and design are meant to serve people, which is why we have come out here, outside our building, with our work," said at the opening of the event the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Professor Klaudiusz Fross PhD, DSc, Arch.

- The reference to crafts - such as mosaics and ceramics - is all the more important as nowadays this handicraft industry is not only popular, but we also have such a need to experience the material, clay, earth, natural materials, materials that allow us to express ourselves honestly," stressed Krzysztof Groń PhD, one of the initiators and organisers.

The event started with a concert by the Katowice Provincial Police Headquarters Orchestra. The musical setting was also provided by the Muerte band and Artur Krzystek.

Chief Superintendent Roman Rabsztyn, Regional Police Commander in Katowice, was a special guest at the festival. A horse mounted patrol was also present at the event.

Moreover, the afternoon programme of the Mosaic Festival includes lectures in Multimedia Room 101 in the Faculty of Architecture building - on Silesian architecture and the history of ceramics.

In addition, as part of the festival, an exhibition of paintings by Dorota Karch entitled "Unstoppable" can be seen in the SUT Staff Club.

The aim of the event is to popularise the scientific and didactic and creative achievements of the Faculty of Architecture, to promote the culture of Upper Silesia, architecture, arts and crafts, to integrate creative circles, as well as to present the works of students of the Faculty of Interior Design.
