Andrzej Cholewa, Phd passed away

It is with deep regret that we inform about the death of Andrzej Cholewa PhD, a retired employee of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation. He passed away on 7th of November 2021 at the age of 74. He was an academic teacher valued by students.

Andrzej Cholewa was born in 1947 in Szopienice (currently a district of Katowice). In 1971, he graduated from the Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Mining, specialising in mining automation and electrification. In the same year, he started work at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation of Mining (currently Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation in Industry), where he worked until retirement (in 2013), successively at the positions of trainee, assistant, senior assistant and assistant professor.

He specialised in electrical engineering in mining. In 1982, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. The subject of his scientific work was, in particular, the problems of ground short circuits, ground-fault overvoltages and electric power automatic control systems in medium voltage mining networks. He was one of the few specialists in this field, author of numerous scientific articles, papers presented at scientific and technical conferences and expertises commissioned by mining companies. He was a co-author of the first programmes for computer-aided design of medium and low voltage mining networks. He cooperated with scientific and research centres in the mining industry.

He was an academic teacher valued by students. He conducted lectures, laboratories, projects and seminars at all types of studies. He was a supervisor and reviewer of dozens of master and engineering theses and co-author of academic textbooks on the design of electrical power networks and the testing of electrical power equipment and safety devices. He conducted further training courses for the electrical supervision of mines. He received several awards from the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology for his teaching and research work.

He was a person of many interests. He was particularly interested in the history of Upper Silesia as a local patriot of Szopienice. He collected a rich library of scientific books. He was socially active, among others, in the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers and in the Association of Catholic Families of Gliwice Diocese. He was distinguished by his integrity, modesty, honesty, diligence and reliability. He was admired by his colleagues and students.

Andrzej Cholewa was decorated with national and association medals and badges, including the Silver Cross of Merit.

The funeral ceremony took place on 13th of November 2021 (Saturday) at 9.00 AM in the Church of St. Jadwiga in Katowice Szopienice.
