An agreement between the Silesian University of Technology and the Central Mining Institute
Silesian University of Technology signed a letter of intent with the Central Mining Institute - National Research Institute on the organization of postgraduate studies entitled “Adaptation of mines to perform new functions – legal, technical, social and environmental conditions.” The program is aimed at experts, managers and people associated with the mining industry.
Falling production, EU climate policy and planned changes in the way mines are being organized will require new skills from mining company employees. In response to these challenges, the Central Mining Institute – the National Research Institute took the initiative to create postgraduate studies in the field of postmining.
The Letter of Intent was signed on the 26th of November 2024 by Dr Hab. Aleksandra Kuzior, Prof. SUT, Dean of the Faculty of Organization and Management of the Silesian University of Technology and Jarosław Zagórowski, Director of the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute.
- The Faculty of Organization and Management of the Silesian University of Technology, together with GIG (Central Mining Institute), undertook the initiative of preparing postgraduate studies entitled “Adaptation of mines to perform new functions – legal, technical, social and environmental conditions.” Postgraduate studies are a response to the process of change and the transition to a low-carbon economy. This concerns the issues of just transition in the context of continuity of employment and adaptation of qualifications and competences to new labour market needs in a low-carbon economy – said Dr Hab Aleksandra Kuzior, Prof. SUT, the Dean of the Faculty of Organization and Management.

- The study program, which is addressed to experts, managers and people associated with the mining industry, is a unique proposal on a national scale. This unique initiative will build the competences of leaders able to transform post-mining areas into modern spaces of sustainable development – says Jarosław Zagórowski, Director of GIG-PIB.
The program includes, among others, workshops on project management, case studies with field visits in Poland and abroad, as well as issues related to the restoration of degraded areas and their revitalization, following the example of European leaders. Topics such as geological, hydrogeological monitoring, seismic and radiation hazard management fill a unique didactic offer.
Classes will be conducted by experienced experts from leading institutions, such as the Central Mining Institute-PIB and Silesian University of Technology, guarantee the highest level of teaching. The unique value of the program are planned field visits in places where the history of mining meets the future, learning about examples of effective rehabilitation and revitalization.
The scope of the studies covers such issues as:
- legal issues related to the liquidation of the mining plant,
- smart closure / smart mine closure (new business models, green energy, hydrogen),
- methane drainage and surface use,
- land and mine water management in active and closed mines,
- geomechanics, seismic hazards and impact on the surface,
- rehabilitation and monitoring of post-mining areas,
- radiation hazard,
- financing of adaptation measures,
- aspects of strategic management in the transformation of the mining sector,
- project management,
- case studies – field visits.
