Agreement of three technical universities for the development of raw materials education and energy transformation of Poland
On September 24th, 2025, the Agreement on the establishment of the Convention of the Deans of Mining Faculties was signed, initiated by three leading technical universities in Poland: Silesian University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. The agreement was signed during the Polish Mining Congress 2025.
The agreement was signed by:
Marek Pawełczyk, Rector of the Silesian University of Technology,
represented by Dr Hab. Eng. Marcin Staniek, Prof. SUT, Vice Rector for Collaboration with Civic and Economic Environment of the Silesian University of Technology- Jerzy Lis, the Rector of the AGH University of Science and Technology
- Arkadiusz Wójs, Rector of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
The Convention includes three units responsible for education in the field of mining and raw materials engineering:
- Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering, and Industrial Automation, represented by the Dean Dr. Hab. Eng. Krzysztof Filipowicz, Prof. SUT,
- Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resource Management of AGH represented by the Dean, Dr Hab. Eng. Arkadiusz Kustra, Prof AGH,
- Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. represented by the Dean Prof. Radosław Zimroz,
The agreement aims to integrate the academic community in the field of education, research, and cooperation with industry in the fields of mining, environmental engineering, and power industry. The joint initiative of three technical universities is a response to the current challenges of Poland’s energy and raw materials transformation, in which modern technical education and interdisciplinary approach to the development of the raw materials sector play a key role.
The newly established Convention of the Deans of Mining Faculties will provide a platform for cooperation in the field of:
- development of joint teaching and scientific programs,
- creation of interdisciplinary research teams,
- exchange of experience and good practices between universities,
- promotion of innovative technologies in mining,
- creating a positive image of mining among young people.
As the Deans of three faculties emphasize – without education and science there is no transformation.
Modern mining is today a strategic pillar of the energy and digital transformation, and the development of technologies in the area of natural resources, the circular economy requires highly qualified personnel. A modern mining engineer is not only a specialist in the field of exploitation of deposits, but also an expert in the field of automation, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity of industrial processes.
Polish technical universities play a key role in this process – they combine scientific and research development with education, creating solutions conducive to the sustainable use of natural resources and the construction of a safe and modern energy economy.
The signatories of the agreement emphasize that the development of the raw materials sector requires coordinated action by science, industry and public administration.
The Convention will be a place for formulating common positions of the academic community in the face of the challenges of energy transition and building partnerships for innovation and the development of competences of the future.
- Technical education and inter-university cooperation are the foundation of the transformation of the mining and energy sector. Only the joint activities of the scientific and industrial environment will allow us to educate staff ready for the challenges of Mining PL2050 - emphasizes the Dean of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation, Dr Hab. Eng. Krzysztof Filipowicz, Prof. SUT.:
The signing of the agreement is another step in the implementation of the mission of the Silesian University of Technology as a research university supporting the energy transformation of the region and the country.
Cooperation within the framework of the Deans Convention of Mining Faculties will strengthen the position of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation as a leader of modern mining education and a centre of innovation for the raw materials industry.
Dr Hab. Eng. Anna Manowska, Prof. of Silesian University of Technology.
