Agreement between the Silesian University of Technology and the Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation

On 12 August 2025, at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, a cooperation agreement was concluded between the Silesian University of Technology and the regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation in Katowice. The document was signed by the Vice Rector of the Silesian University of Technology for Collaboration with Civic and Economic Environment, Professor Marcin Staniek, PhD, DSc and Artur Kaczmarek, director of the Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation in Katowice.

The agreement between the Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation in Katowice and the Silesian University of Technology assumes cooperation in the field of surveying and cartography, including modern technologies for processing and sharing spatial data. The Parties undertake to jointly implement programmes, research and development projects and supportive activities in the field of student education, particularly in Geodesy and Cartography.

The purpose of the agreement is to strengthen the links between the academic community and public institutions responsible for surveying and cartographic documentation in the region. The cooperation is to contribute to improving the quality of education of future specialists and to the development of innovative solutions in the field of spatial information management.

„Cooperation between the Silesian University of Technology and "WODGiK", which is a budgetary unit of the Silesian Voivodeship, has been going on for a long time and is exemplary. Today, however, we are expanding it with the substantive aspect and we hope that it will bring very good solutions, especially to logistics and surveying problems and those related to real estate management throughout the voivodeship” – added Rafał Adamczyk, Member of the Board of the Silesian Voivodeship, present at the signing of the agreement.

Artur Kaczmarek, director of the Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation in Katowice, does not doubt that a cooperation agreement in various areas can benefit both parties.

"We often exchange data and materials in the possession of the regional center. We have a database for BDOT10K, which is one of the most important databases used, among others, in alerting emergency services, fire services, and the police. These data are used in many global systems and the national and regional geoportal. We also have data related to post-mining areas,” said Director Kaczmarek. “It is worth popularising this data and sharing it where it can be wisely used. For this reason, we are very happy to present it to students and staff of the Silesian University of Technology during events organised by the Regional Centre for Surveying and Cartographic Documentation and the Silesian University of Technology, including scientific conferences,” he added.

Precise data prepared and updated on an ongoing basis by the team of the Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation in Katowice can be successfully and beneficially applied within the scientific community at the Silesian University of Technology.

The Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation has been conducting education in the field of Geodesy and Cartography for over 3,5 years. At that time, the Silesian

University of Technology had already cooperated many times with the Katowice Centre in the field of supporting the implementation of education in this field. This is a very important cooperation due to the possibility of updating knowledge about obtaining access to the latest databases, updating them and the scope of monitoring areas, including post-industrial ones.

Deputy Dean for Cooperation and Development of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation, SUT prof. Violetta Sokol-Szewioła, PhD, DSc emphasizes that cooperation opens up even greater opportunities.

"Students will be able to carry out diploma theses, the topics of which created in cooperation with the Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation will allow for more effective use of their results. The databases mentioned here may be co-developed by students as part of their diplomas. As a result, they can supply databases created and maintained at the regional level. All this, of course, will take place additionally under the watchful eye and care of the Center's experts. A valuable new aspect of the collaboration is the possibility for students to undertake internships and placements not directly linked to their diploma projects.

Another very important point of the signed agreement will be the possibility of broad cooperation in the implementation of joint scientific and research and development projects financed from domestic and foreign funds, e.g. the EU" – said the Deputy Dean.
