Acoustic cabins at the Silesian University of Technology
Silesian University of Technology consistently develops solutions supporting the accessibility and inclusiveness of the academic environment, thus fitting in a modern approach to the needs of its community members. One of the latest activities in this area, implemented by the Silesian University of Technology Accessibility Office, is the installation of acoustic cabins in university spaces – in the buildings of faculties, libraries, and key common areas.
Acoustic cabins respond to the real needs of students and employees, in particular non-neurotypical people (including people on the autism spectrum, with ADHD), but also all those who experience sensory overload, stress or a temporary need to calm down. These are specially designed, small, soundproofed rooms that provide a private and comfortable space for work, concentration, or regulation of stimuli.
The cabins will be open to all those who need this form of support.
The validity of introducing this solution is confirmed by focus studies conducted at the Silesian University of Technology among students by Dr Anna Waligóra.
The results of the tests clearly indicate that:
- noise, crowd, and intense stimuli in academic spaces make concentration difficult,
- sensory overload negatively affects the comfort of learning and mental well-being,
- there is a clear need to create short recovery places between classes.
Noise-cancelling cabins are the answer to these challenges by offering a safe, sensory-neutral space available “here and now” without leaving the building.
Acoustic cabins provide, among others
- sound insulation to reduce ambient noise,
- ability to adjust stimuli (subdued lighting, friendly materials),
- flexibility of use,
- convenient location near the main communication routes,
- universal application – for rest, concentration, conversation, or regulation of emotions.
The study participants indicated cabins as potential “regeneration places” that realistically help to reduce the level of tension and return to classes with a greater sense of control and comfort.
The implementation of acoustic cabins is part of the wider current of modern neuroinclusive design, according to which the academic space should adapt to the diverse sensory profiles of users.
This type of solutions is used not only by non-neurotypical people, but also:
- students in times of increased stress,
- people preparing for testing and exams,
- employees who need a moment of silence between meetings.
The Silesian University of Technology began the installation of acoustic cabins in December at the largest faculties in Gliwice, in the Library of the Silesian University of Technology and in campuses in Zabrze, Katowice and Rybnik.
Ultimately, it is planned that – in locations agreed with the deans and building managers – at each university faculty there will be at least one acoustic cabin, intended for free use by students, doctoral students, participants of other forms of education and for employees of the Silesian University of Technology. This is another step toward a university that realistically removes barriers, supports diversity, and designs accessible space with a human in mind.
The implementation of the acoustic cabin installation project is financed from the Fund for the Support of the Disabled.
