About games that teach students: “Games Week” at the Silesian University of Technology
Games can teach students and educate employees of the future, and this is the topic that was discussed during the inauguration of Games Week in the European City of Science. The event was held at the seat of the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC) of the Silesian University of Technology.
During the first events of the Games Week in the European City of Science, one could see that games are not only fun and entertainment, but also an excellent help in training and teaching, provided that the game is properly secured and has the necessary certificates.
“We wanted to show many faces of games, not only those entertaining, but also educational. Today we are talking primarily about the fact that games can teach, they can be an experimental field in medicine and rehabilitation – said the curator of the Science Week, Prof. Michał Kłosiński from the University of Silesia. In turn, Dr Eng. Piotr Wodarski from the Silesian University of Technology added that this educational value of games can be a driving force for the development of many disciplines.
- We talked during the debate and showed at the exhibition stands what innovative solutions from the borderline of science and technology, in particular those using computer games, virtual technology (VR) and augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in medicine and sports training - said Piotr Wodarski.
Among the panellists there were also practitioners who use games based on virtual reality on a daily basis. Lukasz Mścisz from the Medical Simulation Centre of the Medical University of Silesia in Zabrze talked about it, where future doctors, medical students learn the profession through the game.
“In 2018, we started training based on VR technology, but then the quality of the graphics was poor, and we were not convinced. Today, along with the development of modern technologies, the quality of VR image is very authentic, students enter this virtual world with full commitment, thanks to which we can test work in extreme situations at the emergency room with a patient, in the operating room or during disasters.
Participants of the debate on the safety of products using AI, VR and AR technologies unanimously emphasized that in order to be able to fully use these opportunities provided by games, it is necessary to take care of digital security, appropriate safety certificates and equipment hygiene.
During the inauguration, you could also see VR/AR technology demonstrations and visit the Virtual Reality Technology Laboratory at EHTIC.
As part of the Games Week at the Silesian University of Technology, other events will also take place.
