A Student of the Silesian University of Technology with the Student Nobel Prize
Michał Sujkowski, a second-cycle student of transport at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering, received the Student Nobel Prize for his achievements in the Technical Sciences category. The student of our University received the award on May 24th during the Final Gala, which took place in Warsaw.
The Student Nobel is a cyclical scholarship competition organized by the Independent Students' Association. Its purpose is to distinguish students who have achievements in various fields: scientific, artistic and social.
This is the only scholarship competition in Poland that is created entirely by a student organization. It is under the honorary patronage of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. 9 categories fit into the common trends of innovation and investment in human capital. Thanks to this, young people have the opportunity to use their achievements and become known in the world of business, science and culture. Up to 10 best students in a given category are qualified for the final, which is determined by the number of points awarded for individual achievements (such as scientific publications, presentations at scientific conferences, achievements in scientific competitions, or active participation/leadership in scientific and research work).
The competition consisted of 3 stages.
- “Applying for the first one was relatively simple - in the first stage, it was enough to sign up via the application form. At this stage, the competition category was also chosen - in my case it was "Technical Sciences" - recalls Michał Sujkowski. – “During the second stage, each participant had to submit documentation of all their achievements related to the given competition category. The regulations strictly defined how many points were awarded for each type of achievement.”

Upon reaching the finals, participants were required to submit a video of up to 10 minutes presenting all of their scientific activities to date. Based on the assessments of the National Competition Committee and the scores from the second stage, the student of the Silesian University of Technology won the prestigious award.
- “Honestly, I didn't expect to win the title. I am aware of how talented and ambitious students take part in it, and only the best of the best made it to the final stage. During the final gala I had the opportunity to talk to the other finalists. Based on these conversations, I can say with confidence that each of these students deserves recognition and an award. The scientific activities of all finalists not only go beyond the necessary minimum during studies but are something more. Most of these people devote all their free time to implementing additional projects, writing scientific papers and activities for their universities” – sums up Michał Sujkowski. – “Considering that, it was somewhat of a surprise to me. I feel extremely honoured and happy that my activity and commitment have been appreciated and rewarded.”
Michał Sujkowski completed two majors at our University: aviation engineering and transport. For this he received a diploma with distinction. What helped him achieve success?
- “Certainly, the Mentoring Program, which made it much easier to start in the world of science, thanks to the indication and support of a mentor and the implementation of PBL projects within IDUB. It must be admitted that the concept of PBL projects makes it much easier for students to start research activities” – says the Student Nobel Prize winner.
