A new field of study dedicated to Forensic Science to be launched
At the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, an offer of a new field of study entitled Engineering Technologies in Forensic Science was presented, which will be launched in the academic year 2025/2026.
The launch of the field of study entitled Engineering Technologies in Forensic Science is a response to the growing market demand for specialists with solid engineering background, able to use modern technologies in trace analysis, event reconstruction, forensic informatics, or artificial intelligence.
- “We will train specialized experts. We are after talks with representatives of institutions and enterprises that deal with security issues and respond to their needs, and this need is today to educate specialists who will be familiar with specific aspects of forensic issues” – explained the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education at the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Anna Chrobok.

Graduates of the new course at the Silesian University of Technology will have knowledge from many areas that can be useful in work in safety units - from molecular biology and toxicology to forensic genetics.
- “This is definitely an interdisciplinary field. A student will gain knowledge in the field of materials engineering, biomechanics, medicine, psychology or chemistry” - said Prof. Marcin Basiaga, Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, at the same time stressing that a well-prepared staff will be an important support in the field of education. The classes will be implemented in cooperation with the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Medical University of Silesia and with the support of practitioners with many years of experience in uniformed services.
- “We educate responsibly. We are prepared for this, because in addition to excellent substantive staff, we also have modern infrastructure. We are always proud to present these laboratories, which are available at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and at the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC)” – emphasized the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk.

Representatives of uniformed services present at the conference have no doubt that graduates of the newly launched field will find work in institutions dealing with the security of citizens and the State.
- “Skills in modern technologies and cybersecurity are highly sought after today. Engineering knowledge is valuable; therefore, I am convinced that graduates with such specialist and interdisciplinary knowledge will be able to find employment in police services.” – assured sub-inspector Marek Kościelny, Deputy Head of the Forensic Laboratory of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Katowice.

Present at the conference, Prof. Marek Gzik, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education added that the possibility of universities launching new courses adapted to social and economic changes is one of the elements discussed in connection with the upcoming reform on higher education.
- “Science is increasingly open to cooperation with the socio-economic environment, adapting the offer to the needs of the market. Today’s inauguration of engineering technologies in forensics is an excellent example of this” – he said.
Recruitment for the first-cycle engineering studies in the new field will start on 28 May 2025.
