A new application has been developed with a map of geological and mining sites near the Polish-Czech border

A map in the mobile application "Silesian Expedition" includes 30 geological and post-mining facilities located near the border of Poland and the Czech Republic. The map was developed with the help of researchers at the Silesian University of Technology.

The researchers also prepared an extensive publication with descriptions of such sites as the Królowa Luiza Adit in Zabrze, the Silesian Geophysics Observatory in Racibórz, Dolne Witkowice Area in Ostrava and the meanders of the Odra River between Chałupki and Zabełków.

The project “Geological and mining heritage in the border area of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin” ended in June. It was financed by the International Visegrad Fund. Two organisations participated in the work: Vysoka Škola Banska in Ostrava and the Silesian University of Technology. The manager of the Polish part of the project was Anna Manowska PhD, DSc and the executors were Prof. Krzysztof Labus and Prof. Małgorzata Labus from the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation.

- From the period of more than 200 years of industrial development in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, both on the Czech and Polish sides of the border, a relatively large number of geological and post-mining sites have been preserved, which are being destroyed or irreversibly changed as a result of gradual reclamation. Hence, it was considered worthwhile to prepare documentation of selected sites and make the information about them widely available in the context of cross-border tourism," said Prof. Małgorzata Labus.

This is how a comprehensive trilingual publication (CZE/PL/ENG) was written, in which selected facilities on both sides of the border, up to 40 km from the border, were included. These include the Królowa Luiza Adit in Zabrze, the Silesian Geophysics Observatory in Racibórz, the Lower Vitkovice Area in Ostrava and the Chałupki-Zabełków meanders of the Odra River.

A mobile application called "Silesian Expedition" - has also been launched in the three languages mentioned above, which allows interactive searching for objects on a map and obtaining information about them. The authors of this application are Anna Manowska PhD and Andrzej Nowrot PhD. Next, students of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation participated in the initial development of this application as part of their PBL classes.

- The Lower Vitkovice Area in Ostrava can be used as an example of a developed tourist site included in the study. It is the largest area of industrial monuments in the Czech Republic, covering almost 300 ha in Ostrava. The most important technical monuments here include Blast Furnace No 1 with a modern superstructure, the so-called Bolt Tower; the former gas reservoir converted into a multifunctional hall called Gong; the former power station U6 converted into the Small World of Technology Museum; the newly built extensive scientific and technical museum, the so-called Great World of Technology; the shaft tower of the Hlubina mine and the adjacent shaft buildings," said Prof. Małgorzata Labus.

She added that after the steelworks ceased operations (1998), the decommissioned blast furnaces, coke batteries and the Hlubina mine were recognised as state cultural monuments and were included on the European Heritage Label Sites. - Initially, however, the large industrial area gradually fell into disrepair. Fortunately, the intention to demolish the complex lost out to a project to revitalise some of the buildings and preserve them as technical monuments for future generations, she said.

The Silesian Expedition app will be available from 11 July.
