A flower meadow in the University Campus
Colourful flowers, bushes and ornamental grasses can be admired on the campus of the Silesian University of Technology since spring. It was created on the border of the University Campus in Kujawska Street.
Flower meadow have become very popular in the last few years because of their ecological value, ease of maintenance, the wealth of colour in which the flowers bloom and the ability of plants to clean the air. For example, planting a 1 m2 anti-smog flower meadow cleans the air as efficiently as a five-year-old tree. Leaving an area unmown encourages an increase in the insect population and the creation of a natural biosystem.
The project for a flower meadow on University Campus, by the south-eastern elevation of the "Karlik" Student House at 10 Kujawska Street, was already designed in 2019, but implementation was delayed by, among other things, by pandemic. The author of the idea and the project was Tomasz Wagner, professor at the Silesian University of Technology, an employee of the Department of Housing abd Public Architecture Design.
The project involved removing the cracked remains of the asphalt pavements and replacing them with a retention-friendly stone ballast alley. The alley is surrounded by bark in narrow strips in the surrounding area, which is variegated every few metres by clumps of dry grasses such as Japanese creeping bush, fescue and a mixture of pampas grasses.
Apricot trees, gooseberries, currants and sedum, which attracts bees in early autumn, have appeared in sunny places. An ornamental hedge separates the square from areas not belonging to the University of Technology. The flower meadow measures 12x45m. Among the grasses and flowers there are wooden platforms where you can lie down on a sunny day or have a picnic.
