7th edition of the "Spread your wings" mentoring program

For the seventh time, the "Spread your wings" mentoring program was inaugurated at the Silesian University of Technology. Its aim is to support the best secondary school pupils who have started studies at our university.

The "Spread your wings" program has been implemented at the Silesian University of Technology since 2017. The aim of the program is to develop the intellectual potential of the best secondary school pupils, while supporting their personal development and preparation for their first employment. Students covered by this program have a designated mentor, who is an employee of the university.

- Students included in this program are like diamonds that we want to polish. We want these young people to develop in the scientific field, then professionally, and perhaps stay at the university to pass on the acquired knowledge to the next generations. The mentor's help is not only organizational support. Such a person sets directions, facilitates contacts, and supports scientific development.  The student can ask the mentor for help at any time. It can be said that a mentor is a student's guide to their scientific and professional career - said prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education.

Thanks to the "Spread your wings" program, we can encourage the best secondary school pupils to study at the Silesian University of Technology - emphasizes dr Eng. Dariusz Myszor from the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science who once again became a mentor.

- As part of the program, students regularly meet with their mentors. During these meetings, we discuss their progress and the problems they encounter. From the very beginning, we consider which direction the student wants to go and what interests him. Then we create a program that will help him develop in the areas that interest him. Scientific research is also carried out as part of the program - adds dr Eng. Dariusz Myszor.

This year, nine students were covered by mentor’s care. Among them, Oliwia Herdzina, who studies Business Analytics at the Faculty of Organization and Management.

- Participation in this program is an honour for me and an opportunity to spread my wings and further my education in a given field. My mentor, dr Eng. Tomasz Owczarek., helps me in all this. Together we will expand my knowledge of databases, said the student.
