Prof. Olga Macedońska-Nosalska, has passed away

We regret to announce that Prof. Olga Macedońska-Nosalska, Honorary Professor at the Silesian University of Technology, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2026. The funeral will take place on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at the cemetery on Francuska Street in Katowice.

Professor Olga Macedońska-Nosalska, Professor of Mathematical Sciences, was a research and teaching staff member at the Institute of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Silesian University of Technology for 45 years. She was an undisputed authority in the fields of algebra and group theory, and the author of numerous papers published in highly ranked international mathematical journals. She was the initiator and long-standing co-organiser of the regular international conferences: ‘Groups and Group Rings’.

Professor Olga Macedońska-Nosalska harmoniously combined her research work with mentoring young academics and her teaching duties. Known for the high standard and accessibility of her lectures, she set high standards for her students. In addition to her research and teaching activities, Professor Olga Macedońska-Nosalska devoted a great deal of time to organisational work. Among other things, in 1992–1993 and 1995–2002 she served as Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, and in 1993–1996 she served as Vice-Chair of the University Disciplinary Committee. Furthermore, from 1994 to 2009, she served as Deputy Director of the Institute of Mathematics for Research, whilst remaining Head of the Algebra Department throughout this period. As Vice-Dean for Student Affairs, she initiated the launch of new specialisations within the Mathematics degree programme and played an active role in modernising the curriculum across all levels of study within this programme.
For her achievements in research and teaching, Professor Olga Macedońska-Nosalska has been honoured with numerous awards, including two individual Awards
from the Minister of National Education, seven Awards from the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, the Medal of the National Education Commission, the Silver Cross of Merit, the Gold Medal for Long Service, the 60th Anniversary Medal of the Silesian University of Technology and the ‘Distinguished Service to the Silesian University of Technology’ badge.
