The team from the Department of Building Processes and Building Physics, consisting of Dr Janusz Belok, Dr Agnieszka Szymanowska-Gwiżdż, Dr Marcelina Olechowska, Dr Iwona Pokorska-Silva, Dr Michał Marchacz and Dr Beata Wilk-Słomka, organised a science popularisation event as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 project. Beata Wilk-Słomka, organised a science popularisation event as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 project. The event took place at the Kato Science Corner headquarters at 2 Młyńska St., and the participants were 7th grade students from one of Katowice's primary schools.
The first session, entitled "Renewable Energy - Wind Energy", was devoted to the use of wind energy. The students learnt how wind was used in the past, where the largest wind turbines in Poland and in the world are located and how they are related to construction. They also took part in experiments related to the operation of a wind turbine.
The second session, entitled "Renewable Energy Sources - Energy from the Sun", introduced the participants to the possibilities of using solar energy in construction, the working principle of photovoltaic cells and fuel cells. The knowledge gained during the workshop was used by the students to build an eco-friendly housing estate, which they supplied with electricity from photovoltaic cells.
